First ESU presidential candidate to visit campus

The first candidate selected as a presidential finalist for Emporia State University will meet with campus and community groups on Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 6-7, 2015.

Dr. Allison D. Garrett currently serves as the Executive Vice President at Abilene Christian University and will be accompanied by her husband, Chip Garrett.

For the past three years, Garrett has overseen Admissions, Student Life, Financial Services, Auxiliary Business Services, Creative Services, and Construction and Maintenance for this “Carnegie – Master’s Large” institution with more than 4,500 students. In addition to working closely with areas across the institution such as academics, advancement, and athletics, she has also chaired several university groups including the University’s Strategic Review Committee, the Operations Council, the Transfer Task Force and the NCAA Reclassification Steering Committee.

Before her current appointment, Garrett served as Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond, Oklahoma (2007-2012); Associate Professor of Law at Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama (2004-2007); Vice President of Benefits and Compliance (2003-2004) as well as Vice President and General Counsel for Walmart Stores, Inc. (2000-2003; in total Garrett was with Walmart Stores, Inc. from 1994-2004); and Staff Attorney at the Office of the General Counsel for the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (1988-1991), among other positions.

A native of Neosho, Missouri, she received her Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from the University of Tulsa, College of Law, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Oklahoma Christian College in Edmond, Oklahoma. In 2015, she attended Harvard Institute for Educational Management. Garrett currently serves on the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition Board of Directors and the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature Board of Directors, and has served on several additional boards in the past. While teaching law at Faulkner University, Garrett served as the faculty advisor to the law review and was voted “Professor of the Year” in 2006.

The community is invited and encouraged to meet the candidate at an open forum on Tuesday, October 6 at 4:15 p.m. at Albert Taylor Hall, in Plumb Hall (1 Kellogg Circle) on the Emporia State campus. The forum will be followed by a reception from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. in the Rotunda of Plumb Hall.

The dates for the second presidential finalist’s visit will be: Oct. 8-9. Details are forthcoming.

Following campus visits, the Kansas Board of Regents will conduct interviews and make a final selection. The new President will assume office on or about Jan. 1, 2016.
