UPDATE: Traffic Detours for Merchant Street Project

MerchantStProjectUPDATE 1:30 P.M. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3

The milling portion (removing the old pavement) of the Merchant Street project is nearly complete. We understand that the paving itself will begin tomorrow (Thursday) on the east lane of Merchant Street. This is the lane headed north that abuts the ESU campus. The paving will happen if weather permits.

First thing tomorrow (Thursday) morning, we will implement our plans to redirect traffic to the west parking lots from Kellogg Circle (more details below).

In addition, please watch for signs and directions posted by the construction crew. They can change hourly based on their progress. We hope the east lane will be completed shortly and we can go back to entering and exiting on Merchant.

Redirected traffic
This affects the west parking lot (west of WAW Library, Science Hall and Cremer Hall) and the parking lot north of WAW Library (meters and Gold parking spots):

  • The entrance to this lot from Merchant Street (approximately at 13th Avenue) will be CLOSED
  • The right-hand-only exit from this lot (behind Science Hall) will be CLOSED
  • The north parking lot with meters and Gold spots will BECOME AN ENTRANCE to the west lot. All parking (except Handicapped) will be removed from this lot.

To ENTER this west parking lot, drivers must:

  • Enter campus at 12th Avenue and Kellogg Circle.
  • Just past Plumb Hall, drive west into the meter/Gold lot.
  • Proceed into the Orange and metered lot

To EXIT this parking lot behind Library/Science Hall/Cremer:

  • Use the only exit at the north end of the lot.
  • RIGHT TURN ONLY onto 15th Avenue.

PEDESTRIAN traffic from the west

  • Please watch the progress of the paving work:
  • If work is being done around the 12th Avenue intersection, change your route to go farther north and cross at 15th or 18th.
  • When work is being done farther north, walk south to cross at 12th Avenue.

Because all access roads to campus from Merchant Street will be affected, we encourage people to access via Highland Street and Market Street (and Kellogg Circle as outlined above).

If you travel to the ESU campus via I-35, we recommend exiting at Burlingame Road, turning right (west) on 12th Avenue and entering campus via Highland or Market streets to park on the east side of campus.

For events in the Memorial Union, the closest parking is in metered spaces on Market Street and in the lot directly east of the Memorial Union. Conference attendees can park in designated areas in a lot northeast of the Memorial Union.
