Reaccreditation
The School of Business has received an extension of its business accreditation by AACSB International — The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Today, 799 institutions across 53 countries and territories have earned AACSB Accreditation.
New Scholarship
Kansas high school seniors planning to attend ESU and eligible for Pell grants for financial aid can apply for the new Rudd Foundation Scholarship, which will cover all costs of attending college not already covered by grants and scholarships. The application deadline is March 11.
Going National
The Memorial to Fallen Educators on the ESU campus is a step closer to being a national memorial. On December 21, legislation introduced by Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) passed the U.S. Senate.
Information Technology
“Maker In-Service in Olathe”. The ESU Instructional Design Team hosted another successful Maker In-Service for the Prairie Trails Middle School in Olathe. Topics included wave machines, lightboards, electronics, mobile apps, breakout boxes, Raspberry PIs and more.
Arts and Sciences
Luwei Zhou, piano student of Dr. Martín Cuéllar, competed in the 2018 Sixth University Piano Competition in Zhejiang Music College on January 1. Out of 52 pianists, Luwei won the first prize. Luwei is one of the students from our new partner university Zhe Jiang Normal University in China.
Eighteen Emporia Middle School students recently participated in the American Mathematics Competition 8. More than 100,000 students from 1,845 schools took part in the challenging math competition. Five EMS students scored in the top 75 percent, five the top 50 percent, four students in the top 25 percent, and one student scored in the top 5 percent. Inspired By Math is an outreach program directed by Dr. Qiang Shi of ESU; and Laura Albertson and Josh Tuttle of Emporia Middle School.
Alumnus Aaron Wyatt (Biology, Pre-med) has been accepted into the Physician Assistant program at Elon University in North Carolina, one of only 38 candidates accepted out of 1,750 qualified applicants.
Congratulations to alumnus Brock Ternes (BS 2008, MS 2010 Sociology) who is an assistant professor at State University of New York Cortland. Brock earned his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas In 2016.
Library & Information Management
Current student Rachel Fellman has been hired as the assistant archivist at the Charles Schultz Museum in Santa Rosa, California.
Aaron Novinger (Oregon 2014) has been accepted into the inaugural cohort of the Leadership Institute of the Oregon Library Association and received a leadership grant of $500. Aaron is the technology & library promotion librarian at the Oregon City Public Library. He is also a past recipient of ALA’s Spectrum Scholarship while he was a SLIM student.
School of Business
The Emporia Entrepreneur Challenge kicks off next week with the Elevator Challenge on February 5 and executive summaries due on February 12.
Dr. Ed Bashaw and Amir Amaar congratulate the winning teams for the Hult Prize Competition held December 9. Brad and Craig Clark presented their third Executive Hour to another packed room. They discussed “Advertising & Promotions” and “How to Beat the Other Candidate.” Their next Executive Hour will be on February 23.

Three business students were accepted to present their research at the Capital Undergraduate and Graduate Research Summits.
- Grayce McAllister, junior, Business Administration: Research was conducted to find the current models of funding that are used for higher education in the United States and throughout several countries in the world.
- Franziska Willenbuecher, senior, Business Administration: The research studied the question of whether the volume of fast food purchases is related to a higher incidence of payday loans, and hence whether a cycle of debt could be avoided by cooking at home.
- Tarek Mhiri, Master of Business Administration, will present research on the Emporia State Economic Index.
BizHornet Student Ambassadors paid it forward and adopted two Angel Tree children for Christmas. The gifts were delivered to two families. Pictured left to right: Grayce McAllister, Carissa McAfee and Madison Orrange.

The Teachers College
Every single junior and senior (and many sophomores) in the Athletic Training program were named on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Athletics
A last-second shot from guard Brandon Hall during the January 28 basketball game against Southwest Baptist University was highlighted as an NCAA Top 10 play. It came in at No. 8.
Emporia State track and field came away with three event championships and a trio of provisional qualifiers at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence. The Hornet women placed fifth and the men seventh in the team standings out of 21 teams.
Justin Marcha was named Special Teams Player of the Year to lead a total of four Hornets on the Don Hansen All-Super Region Three Football team. The senior punter from Edmond, Oklahoma, was joined on the All-Super Region First-Team by wide receiver Justin Brown while linebacker Gabe Cleveland and defensive end TreVaugh Ammons were named to the Third-Team.
Winning the 2017 MIAA regular season championship, hosting the NCAA Division II Central Regional, returning five position player starters and two of three weekend starting pitchers has earned Emporia State the top spot in the 2018 MIAA Baseball Coaches Preseason Poll. It is the first time since 2015 the Hornets have been selected for the top spot.
Emporia State Athletics recognized nearly 400 student-athletes and student support staff as members of the ESU AD Honor Roll at half-time of the Lady Hornet and Hornet basketball games against Central Missouri. To be eligible for the ESU AD Honor Roll, a student needed a semester GPA of 3.00 in either the spring or fall semester of the 2017 calendar year.
Senior punter Justin Marcha begins 2018 like he ended 2017, picking up another All-American honor. The Edmond, Okla. native was named a second-team All-American by D2Football.com, his fourth All-American honor this season.
After advancing to the MIAA Tournament Championship game last season, the Emporia State softball team is slated for sixth in the 2018 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll.
Publications
Dr. James Walther, assistant professor in SLIM recently published, “Developing Personal Course Plans (PCPs) as an Example of Self-Directed Learning in Library Management and Project Management Education” in the Journal of Library Administration.
Dr. Sandra Valenti, assistant professor in SLIM recently published, “Counterpoint to Online Teaching with a Focus on Management” in the Journal of Library Administration.
Dr. Dabae Lee, assistant professor in Instructional Design and Technology, co-wrote an article “From swimming pool to collaborative learning studio,” which was published in Educatioinal Technology Research and Development.
Presentations
On December 6, 2017, Dr. Steven Lovett, School of Business, served as the speaker for a National Business Institute teleconference during which he presented his conference paper entitled, “Legal Ethics: Smartphones and Other Mobile Devices,” to a national audience.
Dr. Douglass Smith, School of Business, will present two papers at MBAA 2018 in Chicago: “Social Media: Student Predictors of Civic Engagement” and “Student Perceptions of Higher Education Data Collection.”
