Music Gala
On Saturday, September 15, 2018, the Department of Music will present its annual Gala Benefit Concertin Heath Recital Hall, located in Beach Music Hall. This year’s performers will be the Spire Chamber Ensemble, from Kansas City. The group, conducted by ESU alumnus Ben Spalding, has a large following in the Kansas City area and is known for presenting outstanding concerts to sell-out crowds at the Kauffman Center. Joining Spire for the Benefit Concert will be two-time Grammy Award winning soprano Esteli Gomez and internationally renowned baroque trumpeter Brian Shaw. Tickets for the concert are $25 and can be purchased from the ESU music department (620-341-5431) or at the door. All proceeds go toward ESU music scholarships, so donations beyond the $25 ticket price are very welcome!

Briar Starr (BS Communications, 2018) is hoping for job interviews after his resume will appear on a car in the South Point 400 NASCAR raceSunday in Las Vegas. The Burdick native won the opportunity in a contest sponsored by Natural Light.
World Champion
ESU elementary education major Paige Bjerkaas last weekend won the 2018 Professional Disc Golf Association World Championship.
2+2 Agreement
Another option to earn a four-year business degree is available thanks to a 2+2 articulation agreement signed by Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College. Under the agreement, students at FHTC who complete an associate of applied science degree in business technology will be able to transition into ESU’s bachelor of science program in either business administration or business education.
Record breaker
Constitution Day 2018will draw a record crowd! 1500 students from middle and high schools all over Kansas plan to attend. The keynote address by Kansas Supreme Court Justice Carol Beier will be livestreamed starting at 9:30 a.m. Monday, September 17.

ESU Alumnus Marco Hernandez (BFA Art, 2011) received the third-place juror's award for his print "El Pajarero y los Cuervos" at the artist's and awards reception for the Printed Image Seventh Biennial Juried Graphics Exhibition at the Alice C. Sabatini Gallery in Topeka.
Ying Yang, a piano student of Martín Cuéllar from Zhe Jiang Normal University, won two prizesover the summer: second prize in the “Open Category” at the International Young Pianists Competitionheld at the Shanghai Music Conservatory in June and first prize in the “Open Category” at the Hong Kong International Music Exchange Piano Competition in July
Blanca Herrada (BFA Art, 2014) has had her work accepted into the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center in Oklahoma City.
Florencia Arrom, second-place winner of the 2017 National Piano Competitionheld in Asunción, Paraguay, and adjudicated by ESU Piano Professor Martín Cuéllar, has been in Emporia State University this month undertaking intensive piano studies. All four finalists of this competition have studied with Dr. Cuéllar over the course of this past year. The competition is sponsored by the Kansas – Paraguay Partners Association and the Department of Music at ESU. This activity helps attract the top piano talent of Paraguay to ESU.
The Teachers College
Jennifer Kunz (BSE Psychology and Special Education, 1999) could perform the National Anthem in Las Vegas in December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but to do so, she needs people to vote for her. Singing has been a hobby she enjoys outside of her time teaching and raising a family.
Jordan Spellman (BSE Elementary Education, 2018) is featured in a video for Fundamental Learning Centerabout working with students who have dyslexia.
The Teachers College programs and professional associations of those programs will host several conferences this semester.

Athletics
Emporia State's Tatum Graves was named the MIAA Volleyball Hitter of the Weekfor her efforts at the MIAA/GAC Challenge.
Six individuals and a national runner-up cross country team will be inducted into the Emporia State Athletic Hall of Honoron Saturday, October 20 as part of Homecoming festivities at Emporia State.
Business
Over 100 students attended the School of Business annual BizFeston August 29. Games, trike races, and a nacho bar was enjoyed by all! Students also learned about the different majors and student organizations the School has to offer.
Twelve students were initiated August 30 into the ESU chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the honorary service organization for accounting, finance, and information systems majors with over 300 chapters around the world. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and perform regular community service to be eligible for membership.
Library & Information Management
Dr. Mirah Dow accepted a two-year appointment by Kathryn Roots Lewis, American Association of School Librarians president, to the AASL School Library Research Editorial Board.
Publications
Keita Koyama (BS 2003, Athletic Training) recently published a textbook in Japan, “Ball Activity from Infant to Early Elementary School Aged Kids.”The textbook is one of only 100 books to selected annually by Japan’s National Library Association as a certified book of education and is endorsed by the Ministry of Education. It will be distributed to public libraries, elementary schools and junior high schools in Japan.

“Students as VR/AR Creators” by Drs. Anna Catterson and Rob Gibson of Learning Technologies was published in the August 24 edition of EDUCAUSE. The article told of technology use in Dr. Joyce Zhou’s marketing classes.
