Women’s History Month
The closing reception for Women’s History Month was held on March 31. The awards presented during the ceremony were Dr. Rochelle Rowley, Ruth Schillinger Award; Karla Rodgers, Mary Headrick Award; and Ashley Borders, Susan B. Anthony Scholarship.
Corky’s Career Closet
The School of Business and the Office of Career Services opened a second professional Corky’s Career Closet at ESU.
Information Technology
The ESU IT Security team celebrated World Backup Day by holding four short sessions to provide students and faculty with information about what a backup is and the importance of creating one.
IT, Human Resources and the Office of International Education collaborated and implemented a new work permit process for international student employees that autofills student information and allows multiple departments to securely share documents.
Business
ESU has partnered with the Kansas Department of Commerce on JumpStart Kansas to present Kansas entrepreneurs the opportunity to apply for government funding, which can be used to create new businesses or expand existing businesses with innovative products, services, or processes.
Congratulations to Dr. Joyce Zhou, an associate professor in business, on receiving one of the i3 (Ignite, Innovate, Inspire) grants for her project “Virtual Reality in Marketing.”
Five members of the ESU Beta Alpha Psi chapter attended the Missouri Valley Regional meeting on March 31 and April 1 in St. Louis, Missouri. Students attending the meeting were Jason Kuehl, Bryan Jones, Aubrey Plankinton, Austin Brown, and Kalyn Meseke.
Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to Morgan Ford Willingham, an assistant professor in the department of art, who won first place at Photographic Arts National Exhibition Mark Arts.
Phil Kelly and John Barnett received technology grants. Kelly’s will be used to integrate technology into the classroom and Barnett’s was for a project entitled “Integrating Apple Applications with Vietnam Aquaculture Research.”
Máire Johnson, an assistant professor in history, presented a lecture entitled “Uppity Women of the Middle Ages.” Learn more…
Paul T. Taylor, a graduate from the theatre department, starred in the latest installment of a popular horror movie franchise.
Kari Hess, an associate professor in nursing, received the Dr. Nancy Mosbaek Scholarship for students enrolled in a doctorate degree in nursing with an education emphasis.
The Society of Public Historians along with the Student Chapter of The American Library Association of ESU (SCALA) and The Society of American Archivists Student Chapter (SAA) toured the new location of the Lyon County History Center.
The Teachers College
Gaelynn Wolf Bordonaro, associate professor of art therapy, was recently interviewed by Lifetime Daily for an article about the usage of adult coloring books.
ESU held the eighth annual “More Than the X’s and O’s – A Coaching Education Workshop” on April 4. More than 200 college students, as well as numerous current teachers and coaches, attended the event.
The 2017 Kansas Masters Teachers were honored during a banquet on April 5, following a campus tour and a panel discussion with teacher candidates.
Emporia State’s Art Therapy Discovery Day, which was held on April 12, was recently featured in the American Art Therapy Association newsletter.
Jennifer O’Loughlin Brooks, a ’94 ESU graduate and a current professor of psychology at Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas, is the president-elect of Psi Beta, the psychology honor society for community colleges.
Kris Burkhoulder, MS in Counselor Education ’96, received the Kansas Counseling Association’s Counselor of the Year award at the annual conference on March 3.
Library & Information Management
Special Collections and Archives commemorated the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entrance into WWI by screening a documentary, “War on the Wall: Allied Poster Propaganda of World War I,” in White Library.
Dean Wooseob Jeong met with Marcus Schlichter, an ’88 ESU alum, at the MAC conference in Omaha, Nebraska.
Oregon alumna Erica Findley was the keynote speaker at the Montana Library Association Conference on March 30 in Billings, Montana. Her presentation was called, “You Are a Library Activist,” addressing why the activist approach is needed for Montana libraries. Findley is the cataloging and metadata librarian at Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon, and a board member of EveryLibrary
Publications
A manuscript co-written by Guang Yang, Yan Yao, Younan Ma and Eric Yang, entitled “Vitamin C at high concentrations induces cytotoxicity in malignant melanoma but promotes tumor growth at low concentrations” was accepted for publication in Molecular Carcinogenesis.
Dr. Antonina Bauman, Dr. James Zheng and Dr. Joyce Zhou co-wrote “Online Trust and Financial Performance: A Case of Online Bookstores,” which was published in the Journal of Marketing Development and Competitiveness.
An article written by Andrew Smith, titled “The evolution of experiential learning for diversity education in a library science program through short-term global experience,” was published in the Journal of International Civilization Studies.
Dr. Nilo Ramo’s article, “Risk and safety in physical education for children with disabilities: Adapted physical education textbook review and primer for teachers,” was recently published in The Physical Educator.
Presentations
Dr. Joyce Zhou, Dr. Jun Yu and Hangwie Xu presented their paper, “Data Analysis Software for Marketing Analytics: A Study of Industry Needs and Educational Offerings” at the Spring 2017 Academy of Business Research conference, winning a Best Paper award.
Dr. Daniel Haskin and Dr. Liz Diers presented “Chesapeake Energy and Cash Flow” and “Earned Income Tax Credit Trends over Fifteen Years: Between, Inside, and Outside of Indian Reservations” at the spring 2017 Academy of Business Research conference, receiving a Best Paper award.
Ryan Frier was one of five ESU graduate researchers who presented their research at the Capital Graduate Research Summit on March 10 in Topeka. Ryan’s presentation was titled “Wavelet-Based Acoustic Classification of Bird Species.”
Alexandra Ewy, a senior honors student majoring in Computer Information Systems, received first place for her poster “The Possibility of an Impartial Jury: A look at the Sixth Amendment and Human Bias,” at the Annual Great Plains Honors Conference in Beaumont, Texas.
Dr. Marvin Harrell and Dr. Nancy Smith gave a hands-on workshop titled, “Let’s Play Number Sense Games for K-Grade 2,” at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual meeting on April 7 in San Antonio, Texas.
Dr. Nilo Ramos attended the SHAPE America National Convention on March 14-18 in Boston, Massachusetts, where he presented two poster sessions, “A physical education program impact on homeschool children’s physical activity” and “Frequency of fundamental motor skill levels of Brazilian elementary students.”
William Jensen, an associate professor in biological sciences, gave an invited seminar on the regional importance of the grasslands to grassland birds in the Flint Hills on March 27 at Wichita State University.
