Civil Rights Pioneer is Topic of Lecture on Thursday

A history professor from Alabama is the first speaker in the new Governance, Law and Economics Lecture Series at Emporia State University. Dr. David Beito will speak about “T.R.M. Howard: Doctor, Entrepreneur, Civil Rights Pioneer” at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Visser Hall 118.

The topic of the lecture is also the title of Beito’s new book. Howard was one of the early leaders of the Civil Rights movement in the United States. Howard was a respected surgeon, important Black community leader and successful businessman.

Beito earned his Ph.D. in history at the University of Wisconsin. A former president of the Alabama Scholars Association and Chair of the Alabama State Advisory Committee of the United States Commission on Civil Rights, Beito is a professor of history at the University of Alabama.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
