Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Day in Emporia

The Emporia community comes together Monday to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr., Day with events for children on the Emporia State University campus then a celebration service in the evening at Grace United Methodist Church.

The MLK Children’s Program will be from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Webb Hall of the Memorial Union on campus. Lunch is provided by the East Side Community Group.

At 5:15 p.m., the Martin Luther King Annual March will begin at Commercial Street and Sixth Avenue, headed west on Sixth then south on State Street to Grace, which is at the corner South Avenue and Neosho Street.

Grace United Methodist Church will provide a free community dinner at 5:45 p.m. following by the community celebration at 7 p.m.

Samuel Oliver, pastor of Mt. Olive African Methodist Episcopal Church in Emporia, is the speaker. A special offering during the service will be collected to benefit scholarships for minority students at Emporia State.
