Emporia State honors three with 2025 University Service Citation Awards

Emporia State University has announced three distinguished recipients of the 2025 University Service Citation Award — Dave Bingham, Joyce French, and Josiah D’Albini — in recognition of their significant and sustained service to the university.

The University Service Citation honors alumni and friends who have made unique contributions to the life and mission of Emporia State.

Bingham, a former ESU baseball coach and player, was recognized earlier this fall during the Hornet Baseball Hall of Honor celebration. Over his 13 years as head coach, he guided the Hornets to a 557-270-2 record and the 1978 national championship. His lasting support includes establishing the David Bingham Baseball Scholarship and helping create the Rich Alday Baseball Scholarship, continuing a pipeline of student-athletes from Arizona to Emporia.

French, a lifelong Emporian and business leader, and D’Albini, president of the ESU Alumni Association Board of Directors, will be honored during halftime of the ESU football game on Saturday, Nov. 15, as part of the university’s Salute to Service celebration.

French’s decades of support reflect a family legacy of generosity to ESU students. The Shepherd Scholars Program, established by her parents, Augusta and Hershel Shepherd, has recognized and supported outstanding Hornet Scholars since 1994. French and her family have continued that legacy through gifts and service that exemplify the spirit of Emporia State.

D’Albini, a 2014 graduate, has demonstrated extraordinary dedication through leadership, philanthropy and volunteerism. A longtime advocate for students, he has served in numerous alumni and university roles and continues to champion Emporia State’s mission to make higher education accessible and student-centered.

“Each of these recipients represents the very best of Hornet Nation — a lifelong commitment to service, leadership and the success of Emporia State students,” said Marcia Novacek, vice president of Alumni and Constituent Engagement. “Their influence strengthens our university and inspires others to give back.”

The University Service Citation remains one of Emporia State’s highest honors for alumni and friends, celebrating those whose efforts have advanced the university’s mission and enriched its community.
