Employees notified of furlough status

Emporia State employees today received notices that they face possible furlough if the Kansas Legislature does not pass a budget by 11:59 p.m. Saturday, June 6. A furlough is a mandatory leave without pay.

“We were charged with determining the minimum staffing we needed to keep Emporia State operating until funding is released,” said Dr. Jackie Vietti, interim president.

Among some expected infrastructure needs such as keeping the power plant running, Vietti said, “fulfilling our responsibility to students enrolled in summer classes was paramount.”

To that end, faculty currently teaching summer courses the week of June 8 were not furloughed. Summer classes traditionally are intensive, offering a semester’s worth of curriculum in a shortened length of time.
