Emporia State University Police have developed new processes for directing traffic out of the west side of campus after home football games in Welch Stadium. The new process involves three exits to Merchant Street that will determine the direction traffic takes.
- Highland Street — on the north end of campus next to the Kansas Wildlife and Parks building, Short Stop convenience store and Villas apartments. All traffic will turn right to head north on Highway 99. This gives easy access to Interstate 35.
- 18th Avenue — at the One Room Schoolhouse on the north end of the main parking lot west of Welch Stadium. All traffic will be directed straight ahead to head west on 18th Avenue.
- 15th Avenue — in the middle of campus at the south end of the main parking lot west of Welch Stadium. All traffic will turn left to head south on Merchant Street toward 12th Avenue.
In addition, any traffic immediately after the game that is headed north on Merchant Street will be directed to turn left onto 15th Avenue to head west.
“We know we have the highest concentration of vehicles and pedestrians on the west side of campus after games,” said ESU Police Chief Jerry Cook. “This is the quickest and safest way to empty campus after large events.”
