20th annual Kansas Summer Institute for School Librarians

For the past 20 years, school librarians, as well as other educators and public librarians, have looked to the Kansas Summer Institute for School Librarians to provide innovative materials and instructional strategies that effectively and efficiently catapult them into a new school year. This summer, June 10-11, 2015, will be no exception.  The Institute theme is Transforming School Library Services to Children and Youth. Sessions will be led by local and regional library leaders and two special guest speakers.

Beth Patin will share her personal experience as a school librarian when her school was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina and she was inspired to transform her own thinking and teaching about equity of information, building cultural competencies from multicultural literature for youth, and the roles libraries and librarians can play in disasters. Ms. Patin is a professional school librarian; lecturer and doctoral candidate at the University of Washington’s Information School; and, a member of the Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries advisory board.

Candace Fleming knows what it means to celebrate and honor achievement. She, too, will lead in celebration of this 20th Institute year.  Ms. Fleming awarded herself the Newbery Medal in fifth grade after scraping the gold sticker off the class copy of The Witch of Blackbird Pondand pasting it onto her first novel—a ten-page, ten-chapter mystery called Who Done It? She’s been collecting awards (her own, not Elizabeth George Speare’s) ever since. Today, she is the versatile and acclaimed author of more than twenty books for children, including the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award-winning biography, The Lincolns; the bestselling picture book,Muncha! Muncha! Muncha!; and, the beloved Boxes for Katje.

Pre-service and in-service educators and paraprofessionals, public librarians, ESU faculty, and other interested individuals are invited to attend.
