ESU is one of 20 Universities and Colleges participating in this beta project designed by Dr Gary Rice at the University of Alaska-Anchorage. The model is designed to track and measure student learning over a 10-year time frame. Traditional metrics for student learning measure full-time undergraduate retention and graduation rates. The UAA model includes in each annual cohort undergraduate and graduate students, full-time and part-time students, and degree seeking and non-degree seeking students. In addition to retention and graduation rates, the model tracks student success by measuring the number of years students attend the institution, the number of courses students complete, credit hours attempted versus credit hours completed, grade point average, stop out and returns, and transfers to other higher education institutions, Based on how students progress through their higher education experience, their success is shown Substantial to Progress with Distinction, Moderate to Substantial Progress, Minimal to Moderate Progress, or No Progress to Minimal Progress. These criteria are shown for four sub-cohorts undergraduate and graduate degree seeking students, and non-degree seeking undergraduate and non-degree seeking graduate students. Indeed, as higher education institutions, our missions is to improve and enhance the knowledge levels of our students and to assist them in fulfilling their goals. This model provides the mechanisms to measure student success and align those measurements with students higher education intentions and goals.
