Jim Williams

Dear Emporia State Parents,

I am extremely pleased to welcome you to the Emporia State University family. Knowing that you and your student had several institutions to choose from; I am delighted and excited that you chose Emporia State as the place to continue your student's education!

This is an exciting time in both yours and your student's growth. I can assure you that while your student may not realize it, you will continue to play an important part in their academic success while attending Emporia State. Within the Division of Student Affairs, we provide programs and services that foster success academically and beyond.

The transition to university life, for students and parents, is exciting! It is my hope that this calendar will provide you with helpful information regarding transitions, important dates, campus events, and programs to support your student. Working together we will create amazing memories for your student.

Finally, there are three requests I will make of your students during their time at Emporia State:

  1. Be Active in Your Learning. Commit to going to class, spending time with your professors and classmates. Learning occurs outside the classroom, be active by attending theatre productions, concerts, athletic events and community events.
  2. Be Involved in Your College Experience. With well over 130 student organizations there are opportunities for involvement. The Center for Student Involvement in the Memorial Student Union is a must visit spot on the campus. Assume a leadership position early and grow in your civic engagement, volunteer.
  3. Be Safe. Emporia State and the Emporia community are located within one of the most breathtaking landscapes in the nation. The relationship between the community and the university is close. However, we all play a part in the safety and security of this campus and community. Collectively we must all be vigilant about taking care of ourselves and each other. Please always remember to report suspicious behavior, ask for help when needed, and make smart choices within the context of your freedoms.

This is an exciting time not only in the lives of our students but on the Emporia State University campus. I am honored to challenge and support your students in their learning and growth.

As such I look forward to working with you over the next few years!

Jim Williams, Ph.D.
