Grants do not have to be paid back

Federal Pell Grant

This grant is awarded to eligible students who are working on their first bachelor’s degree. Current amounts for this program can be found on the Federal Student Aid Website. Students are limited to the equivalent of 12 semesters (or 600%) of funding. Because the summer term is a shorter, non-standard term, Pell grants for the summer are prorated to 35.29%.

If you are not currently enrolled, your grant is based on full-time attendance. After enrollment, if you are less than full-time, your Pell Grant will be reduced accordingly. Additional adjustments can occur if you add a course or are found to have never attended an enrolled course.

Students can receive up to 150% of their Pell Grant eligibility in an aid year. To qualify, you must have used 100% of your annual eligibility and be enrolled at least half-time in the term receiving the additional amount. At Emporia State University, this extra eligibility is only available for the spring term and requires year-round attendance (summer, fall, and spring).

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

This grant supports undergraduate students with significant financial need and who are Federal Pell Grant eligible. Awards are limited and awarded first-come, first-serve. Apply early each year through FAFSA for priority consideration.

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant

Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides grants of up to $4,000 per year to students who intend to teach in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families. The grant amount is prorated based on enrollment and any applicable federal sequestration. For the summer term, which is non-standard, TEACH Grants are prorated to 35.29%. The amount of the TEACH grant in combination with any other assistance may not exceed the cost of attendance.

To receive a TEACH Grant, you must agree to teach full-time in a high-need field at a school serving low-income students. At least 50% of your teaching duties must be in the subject area for which you received the grant. You must complete four academic years of service within eight years of finishing your program. Failure to meet this obligation will convert your grant into a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, with interest accruing from the original disbursement date. For details on eligibility, high-need fields, and the Agreement to Serve, visit the Department of Education’s website.
