Education policy — what and how teachers are to convey content to K-12 students — is a constant. The need to understand the standards is a need shared by all school administrators and teachers.
A free informational session called “Everything You Want to Know about the New Elementary Math Standards” will be held at Emporia State University on Thursday, May 3 from 10 a.m. until noon. Attendees can stay for lunch following the session for additional discussion and networking.
The workshop will address the Kansas 2017 Content and Practice Standards, the Progressions documents, Mindsets, the NCTM Teaching Practices, KSDE web site resources and the implementation timeline. These standards are to be fully implemented by the 2019-20 school year.
“Melissa Fast, our KSDE math program consultant, is being very proactive in promoting improved teaching of math in Kansas. All of the resources we’ll address are part of this drive.” said Dr. Lee Anne Coester, director of the Math Leadership Institute, who is the session’s presenter. “This workshop is aimed specifically at administrators, curriculum coordinators, instructional coaches, Title 1 math teachers and others who take a leadership role in their schools’ mathematics programs. In order to understand classroom teacher needs, those in leadership roles need to understand what is being promoted to improve instruction.”
Coester presents at state and national conferences, discussing math education. She serves as a school math consultant across Kansas and the US, is a former elementary and middle school math teacher and a former college instructor who prepared elementary teachers to teach math.
