Paying It Forward
Thanks to ESU alumni who are medical professionals, we now offer a $10,000 Premedical Fellowship for a single incoming freshman who will graduate from a Kansas high school and intends to follow the premedical track for preparation for medical school. The award is paid out $2,500 each year.
Kossover Family Tennis Complex
Major gifts from two Emporia State University alumni and former tennis student-athletes will result in a new, unprecedented indoor-outdoor tennis complexfor the university. Inspired by their passion for tennis, Wichitans Greg Kossover and Ken Hush are partnering with ESU to propel the tennis program forward.
Large Award
Congratulations to Kristi Pickett, senior accounting student from Burlingame, who was named as recipient of a $10,000 merit-based scholarship from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. The scholarships are intended to encourage accounting students to pursue careers in audit.
Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to the members of E-KANS, the ESU Kansas Association of Nursing Students,who won awards at the KANS State Convention on October 18 and 19. Three also were elected to state offices: Avery Hall, president; Chelsea Cowart, Break Through to Nursing chair; and Emma Iseman, treasurer.
Four students from the Department of Mathematics and Economics became members of Kappa Mu Epsilonon October 3. KME is a mathematics honor society. The organization was founded in 1931 to promote the interest of mathematics among undergraduate students.
Our Department of Social Sciences was busy during September and October bringing speakers to campus to talk about election topics— Preparing Voters in the Digital Age, Kansas Budget and Policy Issues and Election Aversion: Gender Differences in Dislike of Politics and Their Behavioral Effects.
Professor Emeritus Dr. Loren Pennington will portray Populist Congressman “Sockless Jerry” Simpson on Sunday, October 28, at the Admire Community Center.
“Emporia’s Company L in World War I,” a joint project of ESU’s Special Collections and Archives, Communication and Theatre, Social Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Lyon County History Center will be presented at 7 p.m. November 7 at Sauder Alumni Center and 3 p.m. November 8 in the Learning Commons of White Library.
Business
The School of Business hosted a panel discussion and receptionfor three honored guests over Homecoming. Stephanie Whitacre (BSB ’06 accounting/MBA ’08) was recognized as our 2018 Outstanding Recent Graduate. Accompanying her on the panel was 2018 Hayes Lecture speaker Ron Frierson (BS ’96, social sciences) and Gary Sherrer (BSE ’63, speech & social sciences).
On October 19, we celebrated our new BizHornet Centerwith a Ribbon Cutting. The BizHornet Center is part of the Preston Family Student Complex and was funded by the William & Aloha Preston Family Trust.
Welcome Gary Sherrer, Kansas’ 45th Lieutenant Governor, to his Executive in Residenceat the School of Business. We had a great turnout for the Gary Sherrer Guest Lecture on October 8 sponsored by Blue Key Honor Society.
Library & Information Management
Congratulations to Sara Schoenthaler, an Emporia MLS student and library assistant at the Emporia Public Library. During the recent Southern California Online Users Group Conference, Sara’s idea for an online platform to allow public libraries to swap programming ideas, materials and other resources, won a Shark Tank-style competition.Sara’s idea will be written about for Information Today national library professional magazine and be developed with help from mentors at the conference.

The Teachers College

The Kansas Association for Gifted, Talented and Creative celebrated its 40th anniversary during the October 7-8 convention hosted in the ESU Memorial Union with the theme, “Spotlight on Diverse Gifted Learners.”
Athletics
Emporia State Soccer defeated Central Missouri 3-1 at the ESU Pitch on October 21 in the Hornets senior day match. With the win, the Hornets wrap up their 2018 regular season home matches with an undefeated record on their home field.
Former ESU track athlete Duke Tibbs is in Arizona training to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
Student Advising
Congratulations to Advisor Jared Burton, who was selected as a mentor in the National Academic Advising Association Emerging Leaders Program. Jared currently serves on the NACADA Awards Committee, plus he is the Kansas State Representative and on the Region 7 Steering Committee.
Great Plains Studies
Humanities Kansas recently awarded $3,050 to the Center for Great Plains Studies at Emporia State University in support of “Average Jane: Talking to Women Who Work in Kansas,” a podcast series. The project brings together researchers, interviewers, and scholars to amplify the voices of average working women in Kansas.

Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez Carey, associate professor in Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies, published a book chapter titled “Baby Bumps in Litchfield: Pregnancy in the Orange is the New Black Series” in the book “Caged Women: Incarceration, Representation & Media.”
