On Thursday, Oct. 26, Emporia State University held a celebration marking the official opening of the Feltner Student Union Square. The square, between the Memorial Union and Plumb Hall, has been completely renovated through a gift made by Dr. Ray Feltner and his wife, Robyn.

Dr. Raymond “Ray” Feltner is an alumnus of ESU, earning a BSE in psychology in 1960 and an MS in psychology in 1961. He served as an administrator for the USD 229 Blue Valley School District. He and his wife, Robyn, both have a heart for education and helping students. They wanted to make a gift to Emporia State to benefit students and the university. While touring the campus, they walked through the square and were struck by the potential to create something special.

The couple’s vision for the project was not only one of beautification.

“The square was here, so close to where the students come and go. We walked around, and we could see its potential,” said Dr. Feltner.

Their goal was to transform the space into a welcoming location where students, faculty, staff and visitors could gather comfortably to enjoy the outdoors and one another’s company, making it a true hangout spot.

Thanks to the Feltners' vision and gift, the new square features lush greenspace landscaping and numerous seating areas, some with tables for dining or studying in the open air, and others for relaxing and chatting. Two of these areas incorporate an elemental flair, centering around a water feature and fire pit.

For the Feltners, the finished square exceeded their expectations.

“We knew it was going to be really neat,” said Dr. Feltner. “But you look at it now, and it’s just fabulous. We’re delighted.”

The Feltners are grateful to everyone who had a hand in making the square what it is today.

“We have to thank the employees for what they’ve done — the Facilities staff, the Foundation and everyone involved,” he continued. “Of course, it’s Emporia State. We knew everyone here would make sure it was done right.”
