Retention, Probation Policies

Retention Policy

After a student is admitted to the Health & Human Performance program, s/he must complete the following requirements in order to complete the program and graduate from Emporia State University with a BS degree in Health & Human Performance.

  • The Health & Human Performance major must complete 124 credit hours with a minimum of 45 credit hours at the 300 level or higher.

  • The Health & Human Performance major must maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.75 in all Health & Human Performance program core classes.

  • The Health & Human Performance major must pass three major program assessments at the acceptable level. These assessments and minimal acceptable level are listed below.
    • Practicum I Supervisor’s Evaluation – a student must achieve 27 points or higher out of a possible 45 points on this assessment.
    • Portfolio Evaluation – a student must achieve 16 points or higher out of a possible 24 points on this assessment.
    • Intern Supervisor’s Evaluation – a student must achieve 75 points or higher out of a possible 125 points on this assessment.

  • The Health & Human Performance major must complete each of the following courses in the health promotion program with a C or better and have a 2.75 GPA in all Health & Human Performance classes to complete the program and to be eligible to enroll in HL 580. These classes are:
    • HL 344 Modifying Health Behavior
    • HL 465 Worksite Wellness Programs
    • HL 565 Strategies in HLP
    • HL 566 Exercise Programming in HLP
    • HL 570 Practicum


Probation and/or Dismissal

Once a student is admitted to the Health & Human Performance program, s/he can be placed on probation or dismissed from the health promotion program if the following conditions occur:

  • The student falls below a 2.5 overall GPA and/or falls below a 2.75 GPA in the Health & Human Performance program classes.
    • The first time the student’s GPA does not reach a 2.5 overall and/or a 2.75 in the Health & Human Performance program classes, the student will be placed on probation for one semester.
    • If the student does not raise his/her overall GPA and/or Health & Human Performance program GPA after that one semester, s/he will be dismissed from the program and will not be able to continue in the program until the overall GPA and/or the Health & Human Performance program GPA has been raised to the appropriate level.
  • The student is convicted of a felony while s/he is a Health & Human Performance major.
    • If the student is convicted of a felony during the time s/he is a student in the health promotion program, s/he will be automatically dismissed from the Health & Human Performance program.

  • The student displays inappropriate dispositional characteristics or behaviors on a consistent basis. These dispositional characteristics and behaviors consist of, but are not limited to, use of inappropriate language in class, failure to arrive to class on time, be absence from class on a regular basis, use of rude and inappropriate interactions with peers and faculty, and/or failure to follow the academic dishonesty policy. If a student consistently displays inappropriate dispositional characteristics or behaviors, s/he may be removed from the Health & Human Performance program.
