- Piano
The piano studies program at Emporia State University is a supportive and welcoming environment for aspiring pianists. Our program offers a diverse range of performance and pedagogy opportunities to help you develop your technical skills and artistic voice.
Performance opportunities: Solo and chamber music recitals, concerto competitions and collaborative work with singers and instrumentalists.
Masterclasses: Masterclasses with other studios, visiting artists and guest lecturers.
First-rate facilities: Practice and perform in wonderful facilities with access to an outstanding collection of grand pianos.
Innovative curriculum: Study keyboard literature, accompanying and piano pedagogy.
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Two contrasting pieces of music (memory not required).

- Voice
From classic to contemporary, personalized vocal coaching at Emporia State University allows you to explore the wide range of vocal repertoire, maximize your potential and build your skills as a musician.
Performance opportunities: Solo recitals, collaborative work with other singers and instrumentalists as well as chamber ensembles opportunities such as chamber choir, a cappella choir and Emporia chorale.
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Performance: Sing two contrasting classical songs from memory that best suit your talents. An accompanist will be provided at no charge. Please bring proper sheet music. Concert attire is expected (i.e. shirt and tie, dress slacks, simple/classic dress, dress shoes, etc.).
- Sight Singing: One or two very simple eight-measure melodies will be given to you at the audition for unaccompanied sight singing. You will be given the first pitch. You can sing the melodies on "lah," "loo" or any sight singing system you choose.
- Pitch Retention: Repeat four- and five-note melodic patterns which will be played for you on the piano. Sing on "lah."

- Strings
Learn from world-renowned musicians with private string instruction at Emporia State University. Explore a diverse range of repertoire to build your skills and develop your musicianship under focused instruction on your instrument of choice.
Performance opportunities: Solo recitals, collaborative work with other instrumentalists and singers as well as chamber ensembles opportunities such as the Emporia Symphony orchestra, chamber orchestra and string ensemble.
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Repertoire: Perform two contrasting solo pieces or two contrasting movements from a sonata or concerto (with or without accompaniment).
- Technical Studies: Perform at least one major scale (two to three octaves) of your choice.
- Memorization: Your scale must be memorized. Your repertoire memorized is optional.
- Sight Reading: Read two excerpts from standard repertoire (solo and/or orchestral).

- Brass
Whether you’re planning to major in music or continue music as a hobby, enjoy private lessons at Emporia State University in trumpet, horn, euphonium, trombone and tuba. You will learn basic repertoire for your primary instrument and have opportunities to play in chamber ensembles and weekly or bi-weekly studio classes.
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Repertoire: Perform two contrasting movements from a work of your choice.
- Technical Studies: Perform at least two major scales and full-range chromatic scale. Minor scales are encouraged.
- Sight Reading: Perform some simple sight reading.

- Woodwinds
Private instruction in flute, clarinet, oboe, saxophone and bassoon at Emporia State University consists of weekly lessons and studio classes where you will learn the standard repertoire of your instrument and form lifelong connections with your peers. You don’t have to be a music major to grow your skills and develop your musicianship!
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Repertoire: Perform two contrasting movements from a work of your choice.
- Technical Studies: Perform at least two major scales and full range chromatic scale. Minor scales are encouraged.
- Sight Reading: You will be asked to do some simple sight reading.

- Percussion
Using a repertoire-based philosophy of teaching, private percussion lessons at Emporia State University allow you to study the primary percussion instruments found in orchestra, world percussion, jazz and classical marimba. You will receive a well-rounded and complete understanding of the world of percussion and grow your skills as a musician.
Audition repertoire for scholarship application:
- Repertoire: Perform a snare drum piece, either concert or rudimental study.
- Perform a short keyboard percussion piece, either two or four mallet (xylophone, marimba or vibes). This can be of any style, including contemporary, transcription or jazz.
- If desired, prepare one or both of the following to demonstrate further ability: one piece for timpani and/or a demonstration of drum set styles.
- Sight Reading: Perform some simple sight reading.
