International Education English Proficiency Requirements

All international students admitted to ESU are required to demonstrate English proficiency

All international students admitted to Emporia State University are required to demonstrate English proficiency prior to taking academic courses. ESU defines English proficiency as meeting the minimum required English language ability to be exempt from the ESU Intensive English Program Placement Test.

Ways to demonstrate English proficiency

1) Providing documentation of citizenship (passport) of the following countries:

Australia, Belize, Canada (except Quebec), the Commonwealth Caribbean, Ghana, Ireland, Liberia, New Zealand, Nigeria, United Kingdom (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland), and the United States.

2) Having completed a degree (Associate, Bachelor, or Master) in the United States or one of the other countries listed above.

3) Having completed four years of Cambridge International Examination (CIE) curriculum and/or having completed two years of AS and/or A level CIE curriculum.

The table below lists our English Placement Test exemption requirements. In order to be exempt, you must meet the overall and sub-score requirements. If your score meets the exemption requirement, your I-20 will reflect admission into the academic program you applied to.

Students that do not demonstrate English proficiency scoring lower than on the above requirements will be tested for their ability in English during the International orientation program and subsequent diagnostic tests. Based on the results of these tests, students may be required to enroll in Intensive English courses or be eligible to enroll in academic courses. Students that do not submit English proficiency scores or score lower than the above requirements will receive an I-20 for the Intensive English Program. Graduate students who must complete the Intensive English Program (IEP) are also required to take IE075 concurrently with academic courses.

English proficiency scores can be submitted up until the first day of international orientation.
