Autism Training Modules for Rehabilitation Counseling

In accord with the Absolute Priority 1, in response to Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) number 84.263C, under Topic Area 2: VR services to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Emporia State University’s Counselor Education program proposed a new and innovative project to actively engage rehabilitation counseling students, vocational rehabilitation counselors (VRCs), and VR paraprofessionals in the process of preparing to provide services to the growing numbers of consumers with ASD.

Utilizing the guidance of a rigorously selected Community of Practice Consortium (CoPC), the project encompasses the development, piloting, and refining of a 12- credit hour (four classes) training module focused on service provision to consumers with ASD. The learning modules, or series of four classes, has been delivered in an online format with two options for grant recipient learners: 1) as a 15-credit hour concentration within a 60-credit hour master’s degree in clinical rehabilitation counseling, specifically for university students; and 2) as a 12-credit hour professional certificate for VRCs and VR paraprofessionals.

As a result of our five-year grant, fifteen training modules for VRCs and VR paraprofessionals are available for 5 CRC CEUs as a pre-approved program by CRCC.  The free training is available for continuing education credit through the Commission on Certified Rehabilitation Counselors.  If there are questions regarding the training, please contact Dr. Megan Long.

While not required, an introductory Webcast is available to introduce the module content areas and provide context for how the modules fit into VR practice. This one-hour Webcast is worth 1 free CEU credit for CRCs as a pre-approved course. After watching the webcast take the ASD Webcast CEU Questions form.
