Hazing Prevention

Emporia State University is committed to providing a safe educational environment for everyone. Hazing is strictly prohibited at Emporia State University and will not be tolerated.

No student, faculty member, staff member, group, or organization shall engage in, condone, or fail to report hazing. Violations of University policy include, but are not limited to:

  • Organizing or participating in hazing activities;
  • Knowingly allowing hazing to occur;
  • Failing to report hazing activities.

What is hazing?

Hazing, as defined by University Policy, as "any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person (whether individually or in concert with other persons) against another person or persons, regardless of the willingness of such other person or persons to participate, that is committed in the course of initiation into, an affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in, a student organization, AND that causes or creates a risk, above the reasonable risk encountered in the course of participation in the institution of higher education or the organization (such as the physical preparation necessary for participation in an athletic team), of physical or psychological injury."

Hazing Kansas Law: K.S.A. 21-5418. Hazing. (a) Hazing is recklessly coercing, demanding or encouraging another person to perform, as a condition of membership in a social or fraternal organization, any act which could reasonably be expected to result in great bodily harm, disfigurement or death or which is done in a manner whereby great bodily harm, disfigurement or death could be inflicted.


Prevention and Training

Emporia State University is committed to eliminating hazing through prevention education and early intervention for the entire campus community.

The University will implement proactive measures to prevent hazing, including:

  • Mandatory training for students, faculty, and staff on hazing prevention;
  • Educational programming for student organizations on the risks and consequences of hazing; AND
  • Clear communication of University policies, procedures, and reporting mechanisms.
  • Emporia State University requires all members of the campus community to complete an online prevention education training course through our compliance training platform,
  • Catharsis Productions. This training enables the Emporia State University campus to recognize the signs of hazing and how to report incidents of campus hazing.
