Composition Program Placement Procedures

Placement Procedures

If you are not sure which Composition course you should be in, are coming into ESU with credits from AP, IB, or another place or are looking to test out of Comp I or Comp II, you’re in the right place.

Test-Out Option: Credit by Departmental Examination

Any student at Emporia State University may attempt to test out of Composition I and/or Composition II by submitting a portfolio (comprised of a reflective cover letter and three writing samples) for evaluation. This test-out may be attempted no more than once per semester and may be attempted no more than twice total. The portfolio is then assessed by Composition Program faculty.

Advanced Placement – College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB)

Emporia State University accepts Advanced Placement (AP) exam scores from courses in several areas. If you have taken College Entrance Examination Board (CEEB) advanced placement courses through high school, you may be eligible for Comp I and/or Comp II credit.

High schools interested in more information should contact the Advanced Placement program:
