English + Modern Languages Composition Program

Preparing You for College-Level Writing

The Composition Program

The Composition Program in English, Modern Languages, and Journalism is designed to help students acclimate to college-level standards for writing. Composition I and Composition II are part of the General Education program at ESU.

Writing improves with practice. Therefore, our composition courses emphasize rhetorical strategies, especially recognizing the rhetorical situation of a text and writing for academic purposes and genres. Students find and evaluate sources and incorporate them into their own writing using proper quotes and paraphrases, and the in-text and end citations applicable to English and other disciplines.

Students who successfully complete Composition I and Composition II are better prepared to write for a variety of purposes, audiences, and contexts, both academically and professionally. Academic writing knowledge and skills transfer across all disciplines within the university, as well as in the real world.

Composition Program Mission Statement

Fostering a rhetorical foundation for student success.

Composition Program Vision Statement

Preparing ESU students for a lifetime of learning and success through the development of transferable skills in critical writing, reading, and thinking.
