School Psychology Respecialization Program

Apply directly to the EdS program as a respecialization student

Do you have a graduate degree in special education, clinical or counseling psychology, school counseling, educational psychology or social work? You may be eligible to apply directly to the EdS program as a respecialization student, which will reduce the number of hours required to complete the program and be eligible for licensure.

Why the ESU respecialization program?

  • Individualized Programs of Study: As a respecialization student, you will enter the EdS directly and receive an individualized program of study designed to eliminate repeating courses previously completed and to complement your professional experience and education.
  • Licensure: The respecialization program leads to licensure as a school psychologist in Kansas.

This program is accredited by the Kansas State Department of Education and is aligned with standards established by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

  • Experience training students in other states: Our students earn licensure in neighboring states, including Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and Montana. If you foresee applying for licensure in a state other than Kansas, check your state’s licensure standards. Because our program is aligned with NASP standards, it is possible that completion of the ESU program can lead to licensure in your state.
  • Designed for the working professional:
    • Continue to work full-time while completing the program. However, during practicum, you must either give up your position (if completing practicum full-time) or reduce your work to half-time (while completing practicum part-time across two semesters). Many of our respecialization students are supported by school districts during the program and are paid by districts during the practicum semester(s) with the expectation that they will fill an unfilled school psychology position upon graduation.
    • Move to Emporia, Kansas, or access our program from your home state. This program is accessible to students who move to Emporia and those who do not, including those who live in states other than Kansas.
    • Take advantage of hybrid course formats. We offer a combination of online, synchronous Zoom courses and intensive day-long campus courses.

Additional Information

Length of Respecialization Program
  • The length of this program varies, as it is an individualized program of study, dependent upon your education.
  • Students typically need to complete between 36 to 45 credit hours of coursework to earn the EdS and be eligible for licensure.
  • Students are encouraged to start in the summer semester.
Eligibility for the Respecialization program

You are eligible for this program if you completed a graduate degree in a field related to school psychology (clinical psychology, community or school counseling and special education are the most common), with at least 15 credit hours of graduate-level coursework equivalent to courses required in our program.

Applying for the Respecialization program

Send your most recent graduate-level coursework (informal transcripts are fine) and a brief description of your professional experiences and licensures to Dr. Kylea Shoemaker at kshoemak@emporia.edu. She will review your information and determine whether you are eligible to apply to this program and, if so, will devise an individualized program of study for you, even before you apply!
