President's Message

October 2011

Although we are already a couple of months into the academic year, I would like to thank Mirah Dow for her leadership as president last year. With her leadership, we made significant progress on the goals we set for 2010-2011. This included several chapter hosted events, a new web page publicizing research-based activities and accomplishments and an initial inquiry into locating groups interested in creating new FEA chapters. As the board was planning for the 2011-2012 year, we realized we wanted to keep the same goals to continue the progress we started last year. Our goals 2011-2012 include:

  • Publicize research-based knowledge activities and accomplishments by the Flint Hills Chapter and its members through presentations and/or publications.
  • Recognize and celebrate outstanding contributions of PDK members and the Flint Hills Chapter by submitting individual or chapter award nominations.
  • Cultivate and support next generation of educators by sponsoring events with Emporia High School, Emporia, KS, FEA® group.
  • Increase and retain existing Flint Hills Chapter Membership.
  • Conduct an inquiry of area high schools to determine locations of existing future educator clubs. This information can be used to formulate plans for increasing area FEA® groups.

I am happy to report we have already had a few PDK sponsored activies that have taken place in support of these goals. We were very glad to see many of you at our very first Fall Membership Meeting and New Member Induction ceremony last month. We welcome to the chapter, new members Dustin Burghardt, Roger Caswell, Edward Church, and Andrew Smith.

I am also happy to report a successful 2011 Read for the Record event this past October 6th. Thanks to the efforts of chapter members, Jane Eberle, Mirah Dow, and the Future Educators Association ® of Emporia High School and their sponsor, Ms. Carmaine Ternes, as well as other Emporia State University students and faculty who volunteered their time, we were able to read Anna Dewdney's Llama Llama Red Pajama to more than 1200 students. More information about each of these events can be viewed in this newsletter.

Upcoming events include a Book Talk featuring the book Education Nation by Milton Chen on November 16, 2011 and the National Teachers Hall of Fame Induction. We hope you will join us for each of these events which not only support our chapter goals but also the mission of PDK to support education.

As we go through the fall semester, the executive board will be making plans for spring events. Please let me, or one of the other board members know if you have any suggestions or feedback regarding our chapter activities!
