Biographical/Historical note

Opal Crissman was a student at Kansas State Teachers College from 1935-1936. She was a member of Winnetaska and the Geography Club. Winnetaska, from an Indian word meaning “pleasant laughter,” was a women’s social group for students not associated with a Greek-letter social organization. The purpose of Winnetaska was to provide social and cultural opportunities for students; meetings were held weekly and included a one hour dance with the men of Mu Epsilon Nu. According to the 1934 Sunflower, Winnetaska was the only organization of its kind among the five state schools in Kansas. Opal was originally from St. John, Kansas, and may have worked in the campus coffee shop. She passed away not long after leaving Kansas State Teachers College.

Scope and Contents note

In the yearbooks Opal Crissman is pictured individually and as a member of Winnetaska. These two yearbooks contain many personal notes and autographs from friends, co-workers, and classmates from K.S.T.C. Most refer to classes and activities; others mention Opal waitressing in the coffee shop. Some comments refer to a “Tink” that Opal may have been dating or even been engaged to. The 1935 yearbook contains a newspaper errata (located between pgs. 22 and 23) and a dried flower (p. 114-115). Also tucked between pages (138-139) is a Summer 1936 Kansas State Teachers College calendar of classes. Inside this document is another copy of the errata, two copies of Class of 1934 songs including the St. John (Kansas) School Song and other ditties, and a program from the St. John Methodist Church, dated May 28, 1937.
