Biographical/Historical note

Ina M. Borman (March 9, 1901 – July 16, 1986) taught in the department of research and laboratory experiences in the School of Education and Psychology at Emporia State University for over 45 years. She also served as supervisor of science at Roosevelt High School, as well as acting principal at Butcher Children’s School on the Emporia State University campus. Ina Borman received her bachelor’s degree in education from the former Kansas State Teacher’s College in 1925 and a master’s degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York City in 1933. She served the Kansas State Department of Public Instruction in 1953 as chairman of the committee to decide on elementary science textbooks for Kansas. The January 7, 1957, issue of Life magazine carried a photo story on a new elementary school laboratory that Ina Borman designed for Butcher School. She retired from Emporia State University in 1971, and was recognized as one of the university’s distinguished alumni in 1973.

Scope and Contents note

The collection contains photographs from the career of Ina M. Borman at Roosevelt High School, Butcher Children’s School, and Kansas State Teachers College. The photographs are mostly 4"x6" and 8"x10" although some larger photographs are also included. Several photographs have been attached to a backing material. There are photographs of the one-room schoolhouse, 21 slides are included as well as a one-page document about the Butcher Children’s School. The collection also contains a paperback book about elementary science education that was written under the supervision of Ina Borman. Additionally, there are several copies of articles from The Bulletin about Emporia State University.
