80th Annual Riggs Reunion

2008 Riggs Reunion Minutes

The 80th Annual JD and Lucinda Riggs’ Family Reunion was held at the Burns Community Center, Burns, Kansas on July 26th and 27th, 2008 with 97 members and friends attending.

On Sunday, after a group picture was taken, the invocation was given by Calvin Schmidt followed by a basket dinner.

The business meeting was called to order by President, Dianne Dewey. Each person attending introduced themselves and their spouse and told their line of ancestors. First time attendees were: Louis, Stephanie and Christi Gutierrez, Kelly and Ally Martin, Leesha and Dylan Tanner and Seth Hutto. Minutes from last year were read by Reta Riggs Cox, secretary. Lyle Riggs moved and Esther Henderson seconded that the minutes be approved as read. Motion carried. Reports of Committees were heard: Annette Wrigley told about the wall hanging she had made with emphasis on the Riggs’ history. She said that Edward was a pilgrim. He was given a choice by the church in Nazeing, England to come to the New Colonies, go to the Nederland’s or be executed. He chose to go to the New Colonies. Annette created and donated a colorful pictorial interruption of that history for the wall hanging. Patty Delmott told about the Riggs’ website and how she has updated it with the invitation to the reunion and the picture of the reunion. Esther Henderson stated that there were some recipes left out of the cookbooks and apologized for that. She thanked those who had helped put the books together—Corky Dewey, Carl Cox and Lela Heacock. It was suggested that these cookbooks would make good Christmas presents for family members. Reta Cox told of the Parma, Idaho Riggs’ Reunion June 1, 2008 with 46 family members present from AZ, AR, UT, OR, WA, ID and TX. She, also, told of the surprise 90th birthday celebration in Odessa, TX for Mrs. Earl (Gladys Hawks) Riggs where 31 family members gathered on July 19th, 2008. Lyle Riggs read a letter from his mother to the group at the Burns reunion. Treasurer’s report was given stating that there was a 7/31/2007 balance of $171.00, donations 7/27/2008 of $257.00 by free will offering, $1,033.00 for cookbooks and directories, $79.00 for the family history wall hanging for a total income of $1,540.00; expenses: $103.62 office supplies and postage, $72.00 cookbook supplies, $252.00 directories, $9.00 gifts, $159.32 Saturday lunch and $150.00 for a 2 day hall rental totaling $746.54. We have an outstanding bill of $1,030.37 for the printing of cookbooks less $70.00, for 7 sets of cookbooks purchased leaving a balance of $960.37. A check was mailed to Esther Henderson for $600.00 to cover a part of this bill leaving a balance of $360.37 owed to her on the cookbooks. This leaves the treasurer with a balance of $193.46 for the upcoming year. It was moved and seconded that the treasurer’s report be accepted. Motion carried. The secretary reported that 175 emails had been sent out and 176 invitations were mailed. It was moved by Richard Riggs and seconded by Sarah Riggs to retain the current officers. Motion carried. It was announced by Richard Riggs that Sarah had just graduated from Kansas State and now has a real job. Carl Cox announced that Reta Cox received a new title at the Parma, ID reunion of “Riggs’ Family Ambassador”. Gifts were given to: the oldest person attending the reunion who was Loren Cox, 91, Newton; the youngest member attending was Ally Martin, 8 month old daughter of Michael and Kelly Martin; and for who had come the farthest distance, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Martin, Bend, OR. She was our oldest attendee at that reunion. We extend our deepest sympathy to her family. Her interment will be at the Marion Cemetery, Marion, Kansas, July 26th for those who would like to attend.
