Using technology in K-12 education
Hornet Connected Learning
What is Hornet Connected Learning?
Hornet Connected Learning prepares Emporia State education majors to teach effectively with technology regardless of the device used.
In 2014, more than one-third of elementary students in Kansas were using tablets and other mobile devices in the classroom. As reported in the New York Times, "Chromebooks [...] are now a powerhouse in America’s schools. Today they account for more than half the mobile devices shipped to schools" (2017). Nationwide, similar one-to-one initiatives are being launched at the K-12 level.
The Teachers College at Emporia State has a long history as one of the nation’s model teacher preparation programs. As part of this legacy, the college continually adapts coursework to incorporate innovation in technology and instruction – which includes the increasing use of mobile devices in the classroom.
Through Hornet Connected Learning, The Teachers College is continuing its tradition as a forerunner in the transformation of educational practice.
What Kind of Computer Should I Buy?
The brand and model of computer is less important than the functionality. It also doesn’t matter if it is a Mac, PC, or Chromebook. We strongly recommend either a laptop or 2-in-1 tablet, however, because you will need a device that is portable. ESU provides Wi-Fi in all buildings and in many open spaces.

What Software Do I Need?
The Elementary Education program primarily uses online products and applications that are either freely available or provided by ESU. All that is required in most cases is access to the Apple Store, the Google Play Store, or the Windows Store – depending on your device. These services normally require an account to download applications. Additional recommended products are noted below:
(Pictures next to bullets)
- Anti-virus: ESU provides FREE anti-virus software for all students. (Mac OS and Windows only)
- Microsoft Office: ESU provides FREE versions of Office Home and Office Cloud for all students. (Mac, Windows, Chromebook)
