About the Department

Purpose + Place

The Department of Counselor Education (CE) at Emporia State University is committed to excellence in the preparation and continuing development of professionals in the counseling field. The CE faculty provide undergraduate students with basic skills needed for employment in entry level human services, and graduate students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions critical for effective counseling, advocacy, and leadership in diverse settings. Counselor preparation options include specialized knowledge and skills required for placement in Art Therapy, Addiction, Mental Health, Rehabilitation, and School Counseling settings.

Consistent with this mission are the goals of graduating students who have:

  • knowledge of basic counseling theory and practice;
  • competencies in essential counseling services;
  • skills necessary to evaluate relevant research;
  • personal commitment to evaluating their counseling interventions; and
  • ongoing effort to evolve through professional development activities.

As an institution providing KSDE-approved preparation programs, graduates of our programs are able to transition into their careers with the proper credentials.

Location

The upper level of The Earl Center houses the Department of Counselor Education and Community Counseling Services. It is located at 1601 State Street, across from Hammond Park. The lower level of the Earl Center is occupied by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence.

Parking for students and clients is free along the north end of the lot facing the apartment buildings. If the free spaces are full, you may then park in the blue spaces at no charge.
