About the Building

The HPER Building

The Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation is located in the HPER building (often pronounced 'hyper'), located off of Merchant Street between 18th Avenue and 15th Avenue, with its main entrance on the west side. The two story concrete building, constructed in 1973, houses the HPER department, ESU Intercollegiate Athletics, and recreation facilities. Extensive renovations were completed in 2016.

Building facilities include a five instructional gymnasiums, three racquetball/handball courts, a spin cycle room, a dance room, a 25-meter pool, an adaptive pool, and specialized rooms for combative activities. Also included are areas for dancing, physical therapy, weight conditioning, human performance study, and adaptive physical activity, as well as classrooms and offices.

Campus outdoor facilities include four tennis courts, a baseball field, a softball field , a soccer pitch and approximately forty acres of grass fields. Welch Stadium is located immediately south of the HPER Building. The stadium surrounds the varsity football field and an eight-lane polyurethane track. Various community facilities are also used for our classes.

The offices for the HPER department are located on the top floor.
