Elementary Education / Early Childhood / Special Education
Welcome to the Department
Welcome to the Department of Elementary Education/Early Childhood Unified/Special Education. This web site showcases the many successes of our candidates, faculty, and staff. We take great pride in preparing elementary, early childhood, and special education teachers for schools.
We are committed to offering quality programs that prepare candidates to meet - and exceed - state and national standards. The programs offered through our College have been accredited through the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
To prepare our education students - known within the college as teacher candidates - we use professional development schools where the teacher candidates are immersed in a year-long experience at a school (traditionally known as “student teaching”). We have built relationships with the practicing teachers and their schools. Working together, we guide our teacher candidates to develop into professional teachers.
While this effort is innovative and new for other colleges of education, it's the way we've done it for nearly 25 years. We have even received an award for it.
The department has caring, knowledgeable faculty members who love to teach. Faculty members are excellent academicians and practitioners, with knowledge grounded both in theory and school/industry-based experiences. They conduct meaningful research and provide service that positively impacts the lives of our partners, community, university, and specialized professions. Our students are exceptional and equally committed to excellence in education.
We invite you to explore our site and learn more about the people, programs, and initiatives helping us achieve the college’s research, teaching, and service mission. I hope you find these pages helpful. Please contact us with any questions.
