2013 Emerging Business of the Year

For Amy and Steve Harmon of Ash LLC the goal is simple: to buy and renovate buildings providing opportunities for financial growth while offering nice rental spaces at affordable rates. ash llc concentrates on properties in downtown Emporia and specifically targets new entrepreneurs and small businesses as tenants.

Amy has managed property for other individuals and businesses in the past and started ash llc with an 8-plex residential unit.  The business has expanded by purchasing four downtown commercial properties with a total of 7 storefronts, 2 loft apartments, and a large historic second story that will be renovated.  Amy and Steve work hard on their properties and strive towards improving the quality and value of each investment.  They also support other small local businesses by hiring them as contractors and maintenance workers to assist with repairs and remodeling.

The Harmons contacted the KSBDC prior to purchasing their second and largest commercial property and after completing the Start Your Own Business course co-sponsored by the ESU KSBDC, Flint Hills Technical College, and Emporia Main Street.  Amy has worked with the KSBDC to learn better financial tracking and management as well as preparing to request additional resources from local lenders. Additionally, both of the Harmons have attended a number of KSBDC workshops.

Amy and Steve take great pride in their properties and are systematically improving downtown Emporia with every property they acquire. We are very fortunate to have them in the Emporia community and wish them every success in the future!

A back-up plan keeps me on my toes and forces me to be prepared.  Also, giving back and leaving a legacy is important.  Always keep a level head and give back to others seeking similar opportunities.” - Amy Harmon
