Kansas Small Business Development Center About

Increasing economic prosperity in Kansas

Helping entrepreneurs and small businesses start and grow

Mission

The KSBDC mission is to increase economic prosperity in Kansas by being the go-to advisor resource for business owners.

TRUST: Whether it's an existing business looking to boost sales or a start-up trying to get off the ground, we provide our customers with expert professional and personal care. Thanks to the support and cooperation of the U.S. Small Business Administration, Kansas Department of Commerce, and Kansas Higher Education Host Institutions, a majority of KSBDC services come at no cost to clients with less than 500 employees.

Services

Starting a new business

Part of successful business development is assessing your idea(s) and deciding whether or not to move forward with them. The KSBDC can work with you on sizing up your business concept and helping you formulate a plan for your next steps.

Business Plans

A good business plan guides you through each stage of starting, managing, and growing your business. The KSBDC can help you think about your business in a thorough and systemic way and guide you in the process of creating your business plan.

Financial Projections

The KSBDC makes it easy for businesses to evaluate their numbers and use that information to plan carefully and make decisions to avoid business failure.

Finding Funding

When applying for a traditional bank loan, SBA loan, or a grant, there are certain criteria that most lenders look at. We help you assess your needs and work with you to identify the best funding options for you and your business. KSBDC clients have access to the Capital Access Center, which provides consulting services for business owners needing capital.

Business Registration Basics

Your business structure affects how much you pay in taxes, the paperwork you need to file, and your personal liability. Your KSBDC advisor can help you understand the process of registering with the state as well as what licenses and permits you may have to obtain and any fees you may be required to pay.

Existing Businesses

Whether your business is facing a major challenge, contemplating an expansion, or simply interested in another opinion, you can turn to the KSBDC. An outside expert opinion can be credibly valuable. KSBDC consultants work closely with you and your team to develop and implement intelligent solutions.

Buying/Selling a Business

Buying a business can be an exciting and stressful time for any new business owner. Selling a business can be both financially rewarding and personally satisfying knowing that your business will continue on after you're gone. Whether you're ready to buy or sell, the KSBDC can help make the process more manageable through confidential one-on-one advising.

Business Valuations

We help you assess what your business is worth and how you can increase the value before you sell. When a company is valued, it involves far more than looking at a financial statement. The KSBDC looks at a variety of components, including the operation of the business, customers, the industry, and more.

Business Value Acceleration

We provide you with the assistance you need to maximize the value of your business, so you can exit on your terms. We work with you to determine the current value of your business and assess where you need to build value, enabling you to achieve your financial goals inside and outside of the business.

Succession/Exit Planning

We help business owners who are interested in selling their business to internal or external buyers. By working with owners on how to make the most of their business value, we address their retirement or exit financial needs and plan for what happens after they sell. Our clients are often unsure of what steps to take to make a smooth transition so we help them plan for a future with which they can be comfortable. Our advising helps reduce the stress of the process.

To help with all of this, we have partnered with the Kansas Center for Business Transition as a free resource to help small business owners plan and execute their business transition.

Our Centers

ESU KSBDC is one of eight regional centers in Kansas. Any small business or entrepreneur located or intending to locate within the service area may receive assistance from ESU KSBDC. Any business located outside the ESU KSBDC service area can contact their local center.
