Shelly joined ESU in June 2010.  She was previously at the University of Minnesota and The University of Texas.  She has published and frequently presented at national conferences, especially on the topic of students on academic probation.  Shelly has a PhD in Higher Education Administration and a MEd in College Student Personnel and Administration from The University of Texas (Austin).  Her BS is from Stephen F. Austin (Nacogdoches, TX) in Environmental Science with a second major in Public Relations.

Kathy began working in the Career Services office at ESU in 1996. In 2000, she joined the Advising Center. She has a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership and a BS in Integrated Studies from Fort Hays State University. Currently, Kathy advises the Elementary Education and Undecided students. Kathy is a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach and has presented at numerous National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) conferences.

James Keating joined ESU in the Fall of 2018. Prior to coming to Emporia, James worked in student affairs for several years while also obtaining a Master of Science Degree from the University of Nebraska Omaha in Political Science in May, 2015.  Currently, James advises ESU’s pre-nursing, rehabilitation, and social science majors. James grew up in Denver, Colorado and then later in Western Nebraska. In his free time, James loves to travel and watches baseball religiously. James lived in Lima, Peru and interned on ‘Capitol Hill’ while completing his undergraduate education at the University of Nebraska Kearney. As a first generation student, James understands the value of education and is passionate about helping students achieve autonomy while accomplishing their educational and life aims.

Jared joined the Advising Center in April of 2017. Prior to working at ESU, he was an advisor at University of Arizona & Dixie State University and has been a professional academic advisor since 2009. He is the State of Kansas representative for the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Region 7. Jared has a Master’s degree in Academic Advising from Kansas State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Communication. Before becoming a professional advisor, he worked for various media production companies such as ESPN, NFL Films and as a Producer for TV news stations. Jared enjoys meeting with students to assist them in developing an academic plan that will help you reach your personal, education, career and goals.

Catherine BergmanDr. Catherine Bergman

Dr. Catherine (Kate) Bergman has been teaching flute at Emporia State University since 2002. She currently directs the ESU Flute Choir, teaches applied flute and music appreciation classes, and serves as a part-time faculty advisor in the Student Advising Center. Dr. Bergman has worked in the SAC office since 2010.

Becca McKenzieBecca McKenzie

Becca moved to Emporia and began working in the ESU Department of Art office in 2015.  She joined the Advising Center in July 2017.  She has a BS in Environmental Science with an emphasis in Organismal/Population Ecology from Creighton University in Omaha, NE.  Becca advises the Sciences, Math, Economics, and HPER majors.  She is also our resident “Crazy Dog Lady” and works with her three dogs in flyball, tricks, and nosework.

Rachael joined the Student Advising Center in March of 2015. Originally, from the Emporia area, she has a BS in Sociology, with an emphasis in Family Studies, from Emporia State University. In addition to being a wife and Mom to three kids, she also keeps busy with her family's farm.
