Forum, Focus Groups Begin Formal Discussion of Diversity and

A student forum and focus groups with campus and Emporia community members will seek input on how to build a better, stronger, more inclusive Hornet Nation in which all voices are heard and respected, and everyone has a sense of belonging.

All sessions will be Thursday, Nov. 19 in the Preston Family Room on the second floor of the Memorial Union. The times will be:

  • Student forum — noon to 2 p.m.
  • Campus and Emporia community focus groups — 3 to 3:50 p.m. OR 4 to 4:50 p.m.

“Our goal is to have Emporia State be on the forefront of addressing these issues of diversity, inclusion and a safe environment where everyone can speak openly,” said Robert Page, Jr., co-founder of The Legacy Group and consultant on the project for the university.

The student forum will offer a chance for conversation and dialogue, said Dr. Jackie Vietti, interim president of Emporia State University.

“It is critical that we create a safe haven in which everyone can speak openly,” she added about the forum.

During the student forum and campus/Emporia community focus groups, Page will facilitate open, honest dialogue that will assess the current status of Hornet Nation to shape a comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategic plan for the future.

Following the Campus/Community Summit in early December, those on the Diversity and Inclusion Alliance will define the next immediate and future steps to ensure a culture of inclusivity at Emporia State for all.
