Over the weekend, began signing THANK YOU letters to alums and friends agreeing to serve on the National Campaign Committee of our Now & Forever:  The Campaign for Emporia State University!

The rivalry continues between Emporia State and Washburn; Can the Bods a great success; ESU collected 58,166 can versus Washburn’s 15,541.  Yes, the Hornets over the Ichabods by 42,635 cans!

Collaborate is the title of the new 2013 annual report showcasing Emporia State University, the Emporia Public Schools, and Flint Hills Technical College; the cover includes the smiling faces of students Juan Rios (ESU) and Danielle Weatherred (FHTC & ESU).

Mark Your Calendars for Hornet Connections, Spring 2014.  Freshman/Transfer on December 6, 2013 and January 17, 2014; Freshman on March 25 & 28, April 4, 19, & 24, and June 4, 2014; Transfers on April 12 & May 2; and Freshman/Transfers on June 19 & 26, July 9 & 31, and August 13, 2014.

THANKS to the Hornet Nation Fans participating in the Watch Party this past Saturday in the Memorial Union Webb Hall; ESU Football Team finished 9-2.

Congratulations to ESU Debate Coach, Sam Maurer, recently recognized as the Ross K. Smith Debate Coach of the Year at the Wake Forest Debate Tournament.

Ad Astra with Michael Shonrock, bi-monthly articles that began last summer in The Emporia Gazette will now be included in the Iola Register; special thanks to ghost writers Susan Brinkman and Max McCoy!

The profiles of our most distinguished professors, Roe R. Cross, are now posted on the ESU website at

7, the number of Hornets named to the All-MIAA Volleyball Team including outside hitters Paige Vanderpool and Brianna Kaiser, middle hitters Carly Spicer and Courtney Haring, right side hitter Katie Deutschmann, libero Kelly Holden, and setter Macki Pankratz.

DeWayne Backhus, Executive Director, Strategic Planning, and Amanda Humphrey, Graduate Assistant, Strategic Planning are compiling the results of the campus-wide SWOT Analysis (including recommendations for the mission and vision statements) along with feedback from alumni, foundation, and community leaders.

Emporia State will host on November 26th the Kansas Emergency Management Association (KEMA) and first-ever meeting of Emergency Management professionals from Kansas Board of Regents institutions to explore best practices.

The cold weather last Thursday afternoon was warmed up as Emporia State gathered at Silent Joe to Ring the Bell (Silent No More) to recognize an anonymous gift of $200,000 for the Now & Forever campaign; now totaling $19.8 million!

Congratulations to Dr. Damon Leiss, the new President of the Kansas Association of for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance (KAHRERD) and recognition of Dr. Joella Mehrhof for her commitment and dedication to the profession; ESU hosted the annual awards banquet!

Expanding our reach, the ESU Alumni Association and Undergraduate Admissions Offices co-promoted the new Corky Plus program with a reception of local alums and prospective new freshman in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
