International students showcase cultures at Emporia State University

Explore different cultures during International Education Week at Emporia State University with events planned Nov. 13 through 16.

Each of these days on Main Street in the Memorial Union, a booth will be set up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to share information about Emporia State’s study abroad program. In addition, a different group of international students will have a booth each day to share their culture. Activities will include writing names in their native languages.

Other special events during the week include a student forum that will feature questions and answers about different cultures; a showcase of talents representing difference countries and a chance to help Third World countries simply by shopping.

The full schedule of events:

Tuesday, Nov. 13

  • Japanese Day, Main Street, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Members of J.A. Sakura will have displays and activities including origami folding.
  • Study abroad, Main Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Students who have traveled with different study abroad programs will share their experiences; includes a Corky doll giveaway contest.
  • Student forum, “Don’t Be Shy — Ask Me Why,” 408 Plumb Hall, 4 to 5 p.m. — International students will answer questions about their countries and cultures. Introduction on intercultural communication by Dr. Sheryl Lidzy.
  • International Culture Show, Heath Recital Hall, 8 p.m. — Students of different cultural backgrounds will share their talents, including traditional songs, playing traditional instruments and dancing.

Wednesday, Nov. 14

  • Saudi & Oman Day, Main Street, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Saudi Club and students from Oman will present their culture.
  • Study abroad, Main Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • International Market, Memorial Union West Lobby, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Community Hornets is sponsoring local vendors selling products like apparel and food with proceeds going to charity in Third World countries. Examples of products can be found at and

Thursday, Nov. 15

  • South Korean Day, Main Street, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Korean Student Association’s displays and activities.
  • Study abroad, Main Street, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Friday, Nov. 16

  • Chinese Day, Main Street, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Chinese Scholar Student Association will have displays and activities.
