Buzz Around campus before Saturday’s home football game

September 23, 2013

As the Emporia State football team returns to Welch Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, with a 3-0 record, the Emporia State campus and Emporia community have created activities for everyone to celebrate Family and Friends weekend.

Activities kick off at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 with a Hornet Rally organized by a joint campus-community spirit committee. Gather in Kellogg Circle on the south side of Plumb Hall for a pep rally with music, games and more.

Beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until noon Saturday, Sept. 28, faculty and staff have organized activities for Buzz Around 150 — Family Fun Day. A project created by the academic task team of Emporia State’s sesquicentennial celebration, Buzz Around 150 includes 21 activities to showcase what the campus has to offer not only students, but the Emporia and surrounding communities as well.

“As we have moved forward with this idea it has grown and grown,” said Dr. John Rich, professor and director of student affairs and alumni for the School of Business and chair of the academic task. “It is taking on some of the features of a small festival.”

Passports for participants are available at the activity locations as well as the Memorial Union Bookstore. Everyone completing nine activities — three from each activity zone — can turn in their completed passports at the Memorial Union Bookstore for a free student ticket to the football game, a coupon for 20 percent off all Champion and Under Armor items and entry into a drawing for gift baskets and a grand prize of an iPad 2.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, join Emporia State students and fans for the football team’s Hornet Walk. Gather at the north entrance of the Memorial Union (by Wooster Lake) and cheer on the football team as they leave the team breakfast and head to the locker room to dress out. The Hornet Walk takes less than 15 minutes, so there’s plenty of time to return to Buzz Around activities.

The E-Zone free tailgate begins at 11 a.m. north of Milton Tennis Courts thanks to the Emporia State University Ambassadors.

Finally, the football game against the Northeastern State University Riverhawks kicks off at Welch Stadium at 1 p.m. Ticket windows at the stadium open at 11:30 a.m., and the gates open at noon. Tickets cost $14 for reserved seats with chairbacks, $8 for general admission adult and $6 for general admission student and senior (ages 4 through high school and 65 and older). Family packs with two general admission adult and two general admission junior/senior cost $25, a savings of $5.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at Emporia Country Mart and Price Chopper grocery stores and the Union Services ticket outlet in the Memorial Union on campus.
