The AdvantageWhy Organizational Health Trumps Everything Else in Business by Patrick Lencioni framed the importance of clarity regarding the new strategic plan for Emporia State at last weeks’ President’s Senior Leadership Retreat; SWOT Analysis, GAP Analysis, new Mission Statement, new Vision Statement, and year-long Environmental Scanning were discussed along with introducing Dr. DeWayne Backhus, retired Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor as a new strategic part-time director KBOR Excellence.  

Princeton Review 2014 selected Emporia State as one of the 155 Best of the Midwest higher education institutions KBOR Excellence.

The ESU Foundation has invested an additional $400,000 into new undergraduate scholarships this Fall 2013, raising ESU’s top scholar commitment to $1,775,000 for 2013-2014; most new scholars from the Great State of Kansas KBOR Alignment!

U.S. Depart of Education Secretary Arne Duncan recently discussed teacher preparation programs and specifically recognized Emporia State’s PFS (Professional Development School) and the Teachers Hall of Fame KBOR Excellence.

For the seventh time in Head Coach Bing Xu’s nine years, and ninth time in last eleven years, ESU Volleyball has earned the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association; during 2012-2013 the Volleyball team maintained a 3.57 team GPA. 

During the KC Night of Champions fundraising event, ESU Head Football Coach Garin Higgins announced one of the largest recruiting classes, 118 team members, 35 walk-ons, and 15 near/out-of-state; raising an additional $30K for this season.

STUCO (Kansas student council leadership workshop) celebrated its 50th year leadership training camp for 375 Kansas high school student council students at the ESU Memorial Union, including Michael Shonrock’s GO GETTER presentation; 48 of the 50 years of leadership training camps have been hosted by Emporia State KBOR Alignment!

ESU Instructional Design and Technology alumnus Ken Morrison (MS 2008) received the Apple Computer global award and inducted into the 2013 Apple Distinguished Educators (ADEs); Morrison, one of 15 educators selected, will present at the 2013 Apple Education Summit in Bali, Indonesia.

2013 Summer Academy; $55,000+ of private dollars invested to support the academic progression of 50+ student athletes resulted in 30 students with a 4.0 GPA and overall 3.11 GPA; Men’s and Women’s Tennis and Volleyball receive top achievement followed by Football and Women’s Basketball with most improved KBOR Alignment.

Overflow, the current status of Emporia State’s on-campus housing with 835 students assigned and 15 on the waiting list; over 101 assigned compared to last fall; the completion of the Trusler (open Spring 2014) and Singular (open Fall 2014) hall renovation projects will only accommodate 857 bed spaces.

Office of the President received a letter of support from Michael J. Van Stratton, Laboratory Director, Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) regarding Emporia State’s potential future partnership in establishing a new Master of Forensic Science program.  Washburn currently partners with KBI related to the Bachelor of Science program KBOR Attainment.

18, the number of ESU faculty (and 2 ASG leaders) that participated in the recent training program sponsored by the Kansas Leadership Center (KLC) piloting opportunities to incorporate leadership competencies into the general education curriculum; ESU was the ‘first’ workshop held in the new KLC facility (Wichita) KBOR Alignment.

Our new Internal Auditor, Brain Denton, will begin a consulting project with Academic Affairs to research course sequencing and course scheduling providing recommendations towards full-year scheduling of courses for undergraduate students enhancing progression and retention KBOR Alignment.

Emporia State’s Football Team ranked number 7 on both the 2013 MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll and Preseason Media Poll (PSU 3rd and FHSU 8th); the Hornets open the season away on September 5th against the Ft. Hays State Tigers.
