Marie Miller named interim dean at Emporia StateAugust 10, 2011
Dr. Marie Miller, a music professor with more than two decades of service to Emporia State University, will serve as interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Provost Tes Mehring announced Miller’s appointment Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011. Miller replaces Dr. Steven Brown, who is leaving ESU in late September to become dean and associate vice president at Mississippi State University’s Meridian campus.
“Dr. Miller is well positioned to bring exceptional leadership skills and experience to the role of interim dean for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,” said Mehring. “She possesses a broad and well-grounded understanding of higher education and the critical role LAS contributes to student learning.”
Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in music from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc, Wisc.; a master’s degree in music from Northwestern University and a doctorate from Florida State University.
She taught vocal and general music in classrooms in Antigo and Green Bay, Wisc., before moving higher education, serving as an assistant professor of music at Silver Lake College and Southeast Missouri State University.
Since coming to ESU in 1990, Miller has served as associate chair and chair of the Department of Music and interim chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Department of English, Modern Languages and Journalism. It was during the latter position that Miller oversaw the merging of the departments of English-Journalism and Modern Languages.
Miller was named ESU’s Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor in 2001 and received the Presidential Award for Distinguished Service to Diversity in 1999.
“I appreciate this opportunity to continue my service at ESU as interim dean and look forward to working with the LA&S faculty, staff and students,” said Miller.
Added Mehring: “Dr. Miller will continue the forward momentum of the college during the next few months as we engage in a search for a new dean.”
A national search for ESU’s next dean of liberal arts and sciences will be launched during the fall semester. Dr. Kathy Ermler, dean of ESU’s Graduate School, will chair the committee.
