Emporia State’s Bulletin named best — again

April 20, 2012

For the second year in a row, Emporia State’s campus newspaper has won top honors in the Kansas Associated Collegiate Press journalism contest. The Bulletin was named All-Kansas for both its print and online editions among campus newspapers at four-year public universities at an awards ceremony Monday, April 16, 2012.

“When I was named editor last spring, my goal for the paper was to win the All-Kansas,” said Bulletin Editor-in-Chief Kenzie Templeton, a junior English major and journalism and creative writing minor from New Strawn. “This year’s staff has not only met my expectations, they have surpassed them, and I couldn’t be more proud. It’s an incredible honor to be recognized as an All-Kansas campus newspaper.”

Eight Bulletin staffers and the newspaper adviser attended the KACP spring conference here, where the paper received the All-Kansas awards and 23 other individual awards, including several first places. Bulletin staffers swept feature writing and infographics, taking first through third places in both categories, and Templeton was a runner-up for Journalist of the Year.

Ellen Weiss, a senior art major from Manhattan, won seven awards, including first and second place in cartoons and first through third in infographics. Tianhai Jiang, a graduate student from China, won first place in feature writing for her story on two international students who died in a tragic fire off campus last semester.

“I’m pleased the Bulletin has again been named All-Kansas,” said Max McCoy, newspaper adviser and associate professor of journalism. “Kenzie Templeton and her staff have added their own brand of hard news and engaging features to a continuing tradition of significant journalistic accomplishment.”
