Coaching Education Conference Offered

April 2, 2012

Coaching people to perform goes well beyond X’s and O’s. To help coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors and administrators be more effective in that area, a one-day conference will be held Tuesday, April 10 at Emporia State University.

This fourth annual coaching education workshop, called “More than the X’s and O’s,” will feature speakers from the Positive Coaching Alliance. The mission of the group is to provide all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building youth sports experience. The workshop is designed to help the leaders, coaches, athletes, and parents establish a culture that helps young athletes develop the values, habits, and skills they need to be successful on and off the field.

Two session topics will be offered: Leading Your Organization: Developing a Positive Coaching Culture and Double-Goal Coach: Coaching for Winning and Life Lessons.

“This is an incredible opportunity for coaches to learn from highly-qualified practitioners in the field of coaching,” said Mark Stanbrough, associate professor for the health, physical education, and recreation department at ESU. The department is sponsoring the conference. “This year we are pleased the Jones Foundation will be funding 30 scholarships for coaches – volunteer coaches included – in Coffey, Lyon and Osage Counties to attend the workshop free of charge.”

Stanbrough said people interested in the scholarship should contact Toni Bowling, the workshop’s coordinator, at or call 620-341-5372.

The conference will be from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. One hour of university credit is available for an additional fee. Registration costs include lunch and refreshments; before April 6 the registration fee is $65; after April 6, $85.

More information – including registration information – about can be found at or by calling the Jones Institute at 1-877-378-5433.
