First-year scholars honored at reception

March 1, 2012

The inaugural First-Year Scholars Reception on Feb. 28 honored more than 140 first-year students at ESU who earned a 3.5 or higher grade point average in their first semester.

ESU President Michael D. Shonrock addressed the group along with Dr. Shelly Gehrke, director of the Student Advising Center, and Dr. Jim Williams, associate provost and vice-president for strategic partnerships. Also attending were deans and chairs of programs across campus.

Shonrock asked the students to think about the people in their lives who have made a difference and encouraged them to take time to thank those people. Then, he said, the students should look forward.

"We are proud of your accomplishment," Shonrock said. "You can help other students be as successful as you."

Williams encouraged the students to help others who may be worried about what college will be like.

"Have some conversations with some of those seniors in high school," Williams said. "Reassure them they're going to be alright."

Gehrke reminded the students that their academic success is one part of building their resume. Other potential lines on their resumes include joining ESU's honors program and graduating with honors as well as becoming PALs - Peer Academic Leaders.

She also encouraged the students to take advantage of having the administrators, chairs and deans at the reception in order to build relationships.
