ESU Releases Diversity, Equity, Inclusion PlanFebruary 9, 2017
Today’s release of Emporia State University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another as the institution moves forward to become a model of diversity, equity and inclusion.
Work on the plan began in fall 2015 with formation of the University Diversity and Inclusion Alliance, a group of more than 50 students, faculty, staff and community members. With guidance from co-chairs Gary Wyatt, associate provost and director of the Honors College, and Jason Brooks, assistant dean of students for diversity, equity and inclusion, the group broke into teams that reviewed university practices and organizational structures, analyzed data and researched best practices.
In April 2016, a draft plan was created and shared throughout campus for input, which was incorporated into the final plan published today.
“The process for gathering input on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan was comprehensive and provided many opportunities for discussion and feedback,” explained Allison D. Garrett, ESU president, in her letter to campus.
While alliance members worked on the full plan, university leaders acted on specific initiatives. Already, Emporia State has:
- Appointed a Title IX investigator;
- Created and filled the Assistant Dean of Students for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion position;
- Increased diversity initiatives within the curricular and co-curricular experiences;
- Created thematic learning communities in residence halls;
- Enhanced marketing materials; and
- Signed the NCAA diversity pledge.
“A next step,” said Garrett, “is to incorporate the new University Diversity and Inclusion Alliance into the university’s governance structure. A work team also will develop core cultural competencies to ensure our students graduate with the skills necessary to live and work effectively as members of a diverse, global community.”
