Kansas Teacher of the Year delegation to visit Emporia State

January 26, 2015

When the 2015 Kansas Teacher of the Year delegation visits Emporia State University this week, half will feel right at home. Of the eight educators, four earned degrees in ESU’s Teachers College. And one will find some former students on campus.

The Kansas Teacher of the Year program of the Kansas State Department of Education names eight classroom educators each year. In November, one of the eight is named Kansas Teacher of the Year with the remaining seven Kansas Regional Teachers of the Year. For 2015, the educators are:

  • Shannon Ralph, science teacher at Dodge City High School, Kansas Teacher of the Year;
  • Beau T. Bragg, physical education teacher at Bonner Springs Elementary School;
  • Abby Hedrick, seventh-grade math teacher at Paola Middle School;
  • Jennifer Hofferber, special education teacher at Sunflower Intermediate School in Liberal;
  • Lisa Holt, special education autism teacher at Country View Elementary School in Winfield;
  • Jamie McDaniel, fifth-grade teacher at Sunflower Elementary School in Paola;
  • Dennis Munk, physical education teacher, sports medicine and health science at Campus High School in Wichita’s Haysville school district; and
  • Kimberly A. Nelson, sixth-grade English language arts teacher at Robert E. Clark Middle School in Bonner Springs.

Holt, McDaniel and Munk all earned bachelor’s degrees from Emporia State. Bragg earned a master’s degree here.

Four of Munk’s former students are now enrolled at Emporia State. One wants to be a math teacher. The other three are enrolled in the athletic training program, the same program in which Munk earned his first bachelor’s degree.

During their visit on Tuesday, Jan. 27, the teachers will present to three groups of education students, tour the National Teachers Hall of Fame and be special guests at a lunch with the dean of The Teachers College and a reception by Phi Delta Kappa.
