Seven Days of Service
As one person out of 7 billion on earth, can you really #changeyourworld? As Community Hornets, we believe that big change happens when ordinary people take small steps to make the world around them better. The benefits of investing time in your community are endless, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where we come in! This fall, September 19-25, Community Hornets invites you to our second Seven Days of Service week-long event. Engage in service for seven days, in seven different ways! Each day, we will facilitate a different service activity on campus. We hope that you will join us for as many days as you can, and that your involvement in the activities will inspire you to find new ways to continue to serve long after day 7! In addition, if you participate in 3 weekday (Mon-Fri) events and 1 weekend event, you’ll earn a FREE Seven Days of Service t-shirt while they last!
All week, take pictures and tag them on social media with the hash tag #changeyourworld. If your RSO or group is interested in hosting a day of Seven Days of Service, or if you have any questions about the event, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Kick-Off Event - Thank an ESU Employee

Join us as we kick off the week with a bang! At this kick-off celebration, we will have free cookies and lemonade, fun activities, and an opportunity for YOU to tell US why you serve! We will also be writing thank you notes to ESU employees. Help us give a huge shout out to the people that keep this university running! This is a great opportunity to let your professors, supervisors, administrators, custodians, and anyone else you can think of know that they are appreciated. We will provide everything you need!
Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child

Each year, Operation Christmas Child sends hundreds of packages to children in need during the holiday season. The packages might include toys, approved toiletries, school supplies, and more. We will provide shoeboxes for the first 100 participants, but everyone is encouraged to bring in their own shoebox and items! At the event, we will pack our boxes and write letters to the children receiving these special gifts. What a great opportunity to show people all over the world that ESU cares! You can be a HUGE help by bringing items in advance to the front desk of the Center for Student Involvement!
Love Your Campus Clean-Up

We have a gorgeous campus, but sometimes it gets a little cluttered. On this day, we will take the time to show our campus some love and clean it up! You can check in either at the usual spot or in front of Visser Hall if it’s more convenient for your class schedule. We will send you to a location with a trash bag and gloves. Imagine what the difference would be if every person on campus picked up one piece of trash. Even if you only have 15 minutes, come out and see how you can help!
Clothing Drive for Local Organizations
Thursday, September 22 | 11:00AM-2:00PM | Memorial Union West Lobby
Instead of pushing around all of those clothes you don’t wear anymore, why not donate them? On this day, bring all of those clothes to campus and we’ll take care of it for you! All clothes collected will be donated to the Emporia Rescue Mission and the Salvation Army. The Emporia Rescue Mission provides a community food kitchen, a homeless shelter for men, and a community clothing boutique. You can learn more about their services and mission at their website here. The Salvation Army operates a thrift store offering affordable clothing to the community. All of the money they make in the thrift store is utilized through programs and services for community members and families. Help us support the giving mission of these organizations this week! Bring in your shirts, pants, hats, gloves, shoes—we’ll take it all as long as it is in acceptable condition.
Pay It Forward Challenge

To bring in the weekend, we are challenging students to practice “Paying it Forward.” Stop by our table to sign in, and we’ll give you a special challenge card. Once you receive your card, you’ll have the chance to go complete a random act of kindness for somebody else. We hope that whoever you pay it forward to will continue the cycle!
NITTY GRITTY TYE DYE RUN
Saturday, September 24 | 10:00AM-12:00PM | Starting in Kellogg Circle
Who knew service could be so colorful?! You really don’t want to miss this event! Proceeds from the Nitty Gritty Tye Dye run support local organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Flint Hills, Camp Alexander, and Emporia Childcare. You can get credit for Seven Days of Service by participating in the run or volunteering! If you miss the September 9 deadline for volunteering, you can still help with this event! Sign up to join the spirit crew to help cheer our runners on, or sign up to help with clean-up after the run. We will have more information about volunteer shifts and responsibilities the week before and during the event!
Emporia Walk for Hunger
Sunday, September 25 | 2:00PM-4:30PM | Welch Stadium
Did you know that Lyon County has one of the highest poverty rates in the state of Kansas? Even people right here on our campus are affected by hunger. The Emporia Walk for Hunger is an effort to alleviate hunger in the Lyon County area by raising food and monetary donations for local organizations—including our own Corky’s Cupboard campus food pantry. To participate in this event, gather your friends and family in advance and start collecting pledges of money or food. The day of the event, we will collect all donations and then walk to show our support for the cause. This event will also include music and games for the whole family to enjoy, with water provided by the Salvation Army.
