Biological Sciences Scholarships

The department gives out nearly $30,000 a year in scholarships

Biology scholars awards are provided in addition to the University-wide scholarship program at Emporia State University. Each award has unique requirements for eligibility. Each year the Department of Biological Sciences awards about $30,000 in scholarship money.

Typical award amounts are between $500-$2,000 per year. Scholarships are awarded to both new and continuing students.

The department has 13 scholarship funds, each with their own unique criteria. To apply for departmental scholarships, fill out the online application and you will be matched to the appropriate award by the scholarship committee.

  • Complete the Biological Sciences Scholarship Application online by February 12th. Application must include a cover letter detailing their inspiration for pursuing a degree in biology and their motivation for applying for a departmental scholarship. PDF format recommended.
    • All scholarships are renewable but require a new application each year.

Biology students are also eligible for scholarships awarded outside of the department these require a separate application.

Biology Scholarship Funds


FRANK U.G. AGRELIUS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

A recipient of the Agrelius Scholarship must be pursuing a biology degree in any field of biology (B.S., B.A., or B.S.E.) and should have completed 59 hours before the fall semester for which the scholarship would first be awarded..


BEAU ARNDT "LOVE OF THE OUTDOORS" SCHOLARSHIP

An annual scholarship awarded to a full time student with: A) a GPA between 2.5 and 3.5, B) majoring in biology or earth science, and C) with preference given to an incoming freshman graduating from Northern Heights High School, or secondly a Lyon County high school; otherwise a Kansas high school.


DR. ROBERT & LOUISE BOLES SCHOLARSHIP

This award is available to any biology major at any level.


DR. JOHN & RUTH BREUKELMAN SCHOLARSHIP

This award is available to any biology major at any level.


Premedical Fellowship

A number of medical professionals who are ESU alumni and friends came together in 2017 with a shared goal: to recruit exceptional incoming freshmen and support them in their pursuit of being admitted to medical school.
To be considered for this scholarship, applicants must:

  • be an incoming ESU freshman,
  • be a graduate of a Kansas high school, and
  • have declared their intention to follow the pre-medical track for preparation for medical school

One successful applicant will receive a $10,000 fellowship, payable as $2,500 per year for four years, so long as they remain on the premedical track and maintain full-time academic status with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.

John and Anne Frey Biology Undergraduate Research Scholarship

The recipient must be an undergraduate student majoring in biology and conducting mentored, collaborative research with biology faculty.


Mary F. and Kenneth A. HUTTON SCHOLAR

A recipient of the Hutton Scholarship must be an upperclassman pursuing a biology degree field ecology or fisheries/wildlife management.


DR. CHARLES R. MAIER BIOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP

Criteria for the Maier scholarship are: A) biology major, B) in their sophomore or junior year, C) with a minimum of 2.8 GPA, and D) preference to students working in natural or environmental science.


SCHNITTKER-MUSICK SCHOLARS

Recipients of the Schnittker-Musick Scholarships must be pursuing a biology degree in any field of biology (B.S., B.A., or B.S.E.) and should have completed 59 hours before the fall semester for which the scholarship would be awarded. Preference is given to applicants who graduated from Cunningham High School or other rural Kansas high schools.


C.F. GLADFELTER SCHOLARSHIP

This fund provides scholarships for outstanding and worthy students with first preference given to students who plan to major in the Biology Department and are working directly with the Ross Reservation.


ROBERT F. CLARKE MEMORIAL BIOLOGY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

Recipients must be full-time Graduate Students majoring in Biology with a minimum GPA of 3.0.


KATHERINE SMALLEY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

This fund provides scholarships for outstanding graduate students majoring in Biology.
