The Department of Art is a tight knit community of artists, designers and educators. Together, faculty and students are making professional quality engravings, paintings, sculptures, artist books, installations, community art projects, ceramics, glass and so much more. Art at Emporia State provides a world-class visiting artist lecture series in addition to distinctive programs including Glass Blowing and Engraving Arts. Our award-winning faculty are committed to preparing students for creative and rewarding careers in the arts.
The Department of Biological Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate training across all biological sub-disciplines. The flexibility of our program allows students to choose a concentration area that is tailored to meet their specific interests and needs. All of our programs of study emphasize high-impact, hands on learning and feature a large number of field and lab classes allowing students to experience the excitement of actually doing biology.
The Communication Program at Emporia State offers a variety of courses and concentrations of study, which are designed to provide communication majors with cognitive abilities, competencies, and skills that equip them to meet the challenges of evolving workplaces, navigate emerging technologies, and respond to complex social problems. Our alumni are successful relationship partners, engaged leaders in society, informed global citizens and consumers, as well as contributing members of organizations. Effective communication skills never become obsolete. Instead, individuals with these skills benefit both personally and professionally. Research routinely shows that strong communication skills are among the most desired by employers.
Emporia State University began producing theatre in 1913 making us has one of the oldest theatre programs in the country. We have energetic students, enthusiastic community support and are proud to be a part of the Department of Communication and Theatre where our students receive individual attention from our committed and celebrated faculty. Here students can earn a BFA or BA in theatre, or gain certification to become a secondary teacher in our BSE program in speech and theatre. And through our affiliation with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival our students are part of a vital and thriving national theatre.
At Emporia State, the Department of English, Modern Languages, and Journalism honors its long-standing tradition of student support and interaction with its outstanding faculty by providing a variety of educational programs for students at all levels. This department has two primary goals: to teach you to write clearly and effectively and to help you develop an understanding of language and literature and the ways in which they inform our lives.
The Interdisciplinary Studies Department is dedicated to giving students the freedom and flexibility to expand beyond the confines of a single area of study and combine knowledge and courses from multiple departments on campus to construct their degrees. Through exploration and integration of varying knowledge bases, Interdisciplinary Studies students are well suited for a variety of careers and are prepared to approach complex problems with creative, multi-faceted solutions.
The Department of Mathematics and Economics is one of the only departments in the United States to combine these two disciplines. The department is also known throughout the region for preparing future teachers of mathematics.
The arts are strong at Emporia State University—our music department is led by a group of outstanding musician faculty, all ready to offer lessons on any instrument you desire. With small class sizes and tight student-professor ratios, you won’t find yourself sandwiched in an auditorium just listening to a great professor; you’ll get to work one-on-one with them to develop your skills. ESU gives you the chance to explore and strive towards your highest potential.
Emporia State University Department of Nursing offers a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The nursing curriculum requires three years for completion once admitted into the major, totaling 128 credit hours. Students generally apply for admission to the program at the sophomore level. The program has education tracks for traditional students, licensed practical nurses, and registered nurse students. Graduates of ESU Department of Nursing are eligible to take the national licensure examination for registered nursing (NCLEX-RN).
The Department of Physical Sciences (Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and Physical Sciences Education) provides educational experiences ranging from individual courses to pre-professional programs, certificate programs, baccalaureate degrees, and graduate degrees. The Department of Social Sciences includes majors in History, Political Science, and Social Sciences Education, along with minors in Geography and Philosophy. In addition, we have interdisciplinary minors in Legal Studies (Pre-law), National Security, and East Asian Studies available.
Deepen your understanding of society with a bachelor's degree in Sociology or Crime and Delinquency Studies and become an agent of social change. As a department within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, we offer Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Crime and Delinquency Studies. We also offer minors in both areas and Anthropology.
